Bar/Wine near Craft and Gramercy Tavern

Greetings! We have a dinner planned at Craft next week but our reservations are at 10:30. So, we are looking for a few nice bars / wine bars to hang out at within walking distance. We are celebrating a 40th birthday so would love some really nice spots with a great atmosphere to kill some time. Thanks to all!

  1. Raines Law Room, for sure. Very nice, great cocktails - can be a bit of a wait to get in sometimes, though. They take reservations, but for Sunday - Tuesday only. The rest of the week it's FCFS. They're cool about it, though, and will take your cell number and call you when your table's ready.

Thanks sgordon....looks amazing. We will definitely give it a shot. Can someone tell me if Gramercy Tavern has a good bar for cocktails? We plan to go to a few different places and I'm curious if this one should be on the list. Thanks!

There are always 7 or 8 interesting "special" cocktails at Gramercy and the bartenders are generally outstanding. They have a very good selection of spirits (try the Reisetbauer Ginger), some excellent hard to find beers and an extremely deep, fairly reasonably priced wine list with interesting choices from pretty much anywhere.

Thanks, deesher. will it be super crowded on friday around 5pm and is it a fun bar to hang our for a few drinks?

GT does have excellent cocktails - and their beer list is one of the best in any fine dining restaurant - but they'll be mobbed around 5:00 on a Friday, as they serve food in the bar and it'll be jammed with people having early dinner who left work early for the weekend. RLR being just a bar usually doesn't get too busy until later.

That said, starting drinking at 5:00 with a 10:30 dinner ahead... five+ hours of drinking before dinner? You might be all tuckered out by the time you get to Craft... (I say that as someone turning forty very soon...)

If you want to start around 5pm on a Friday, I'd head straight to Flatiron Lounge or Raines Law Room, before either gets crowded later on in the night. Neither serves real food though. Flatiron serves a snack/nut/party mix, and Raines has popcorn.

If you're worried about being peckish/soaking up the alcohol, maybe the bar at Maialino, where you can have some snacks while you drink.

      2. Veritas has a very good wine menu (and serves food if you want a bite at the bar). Flute is another suggestion if you're into champagne. I haven't been, but friends have said it's not bad.

I also agree about the bar at Gramercy Tavern. I was pleasantly surprised.
