Cafe Select

Just read the NYT piece on fondue, and saw the recommendation for Cafe Select. Never been. Very appealing menu (just read it on their website). Problem is that the chef is Ingrid Roettele, and she was last at Heartbreak, where I found the food shockingly lousy.

Any experiences at Cafe Select? I'm particularly interested in the fondue menu...

I did like Roettele AG back in the day...

  1. i had lunch once there a while back: wasn't impressed (i have zero memory of what i ate, but i never had any desire to return)...and went there once for a drinks/party...i'm in that area all the time, so i'd be curious if there are any current reports

    1. While I can't speak to the fondue offerings, I've had the croque madame here a few times and thought it was pretty good. The home made chips are a nice touch. I'm in the area for work from time to time and find it a nice place for a late lunch.

I read the NY article too. Where else can you get raclette and fondue?

Type them into the find-a-food feature on menupages.com - lots of results. Do them separately though.

      2. Shockingly lousy indeed. Last night we ordered oysters and got lukewarm snotty bivalves which had to be sent back. We also ordered mushroom toast with poached eggs. The toast arrived with boiled eggs! We sent it back and the waiter asked if we wanted "hard" or "soft" poached eggs. Sigh.

Food aside (grumble grumble), the ambiance is lovely.

when it first opened (2009?), it had a buzz and i went. service was absolutely horrible and the food was merely passable. i had a decent schnitzel if i recall.

i cant believe the place is still in business but i always see some hipsters in there because they dont know any better.
