Vegetarian around Durham, NC?

I am throwing a bachelorette party for a friend who is located in Durham, NC. I am in NYC and have never been to NC before. Before we do our zany bachelorette thing (blech), I want to make sure that we at least have a good meal. There will be about 10-20 folks, most of whom are vegetarian. Any suggestions?

  1. I'd suggest Sage Cafe in Chapel Hill, it's all veg & charming.

    1. Butternut Squash (in Chapel Hill) is exclusively vegetarian. Not sure if it is big enough for a party of 10-20, but you could contact them. Not sure how fancy you want this to be, but the Federal has great veg. nachos, veg sliders, and usually a veg risotto of the day. I think the back room would hold 10-20. It's a bar, but the food is really good.

      1. Butternut Squash and Sage are both good, but small places. Not sure they'd be able to accommodate 10-20. Would you be interested in Indian? There are some good Indian places around, and they'd have some decent veg choices.

        1. My vegetarian wife likes Pomegranate Kitchen, and, as a non-vegetarian I think a lot of their dishes are pretty good.

A couple of things to I remember:
          1. They don't take credit card.
          2. This place is pretty much a take-out/catering place. Not the place for 10-20 people to hang out.
          3. They close pretty early(around 6 or 6:30) and I was told more than once it's best to pick up their food in the afternoon because that's when they cook their food or it's warm or something along those lines.

If you are interested in Pomegranate Kitchen http://www.pomkitchen.com/ you may be able to arrange to have your food brought to/bring your food to the neighboring Straw Valley Cafe where you can get wine, coffee and pastries and maybe even have your whole event.

I'm vegetarian and wouldn't recommend Butternut Squash, I haven't been in ages their food is mediocre. Panzanella (Italian) in Carrboro is excellent, makes their own pasta & bread & has lots of veg offerings. If you like Indian, Tower in Morrisville is said to be good & in Chapel Hill there is the excellent Vimala's - with a funky vibe & more sedate Cholanad. I've been to both & they are excellent. All these places can handle your crowd.

My Tamil friend made the trek from Apex to try Cholanad and was really impressed. He talked to the chef who told him he trained at two 5-star restaurants in Bangalore.

          2. I second Cholanad in Chapel Hill. It has a bar and has a more elegant atmosphere for a party. Plus, it has plenty of space. Here is a link to the menu.
