Ridgewood Thai - New Thai in Ridgewood That Doesn't Suck!
Within spitting distance of the Glendale-Ridgewood border, I can walk to this in five minutes. My nabe has finally entered the 90's. (So where's all them high-fallutin' tech jobs?! Oh wait...never mind.)
Ridgewood Thai is in a location that formerly housed a very strange bubble tea concern - one that appeared to operate under the mission statement of, "if you sell next to nothing, no one will come." Or, perhaps it was the idea of: Restaurant as Negative Space. Or, maybe that fleeting bubble tea thing was an art installation by Yoko Ono. Who the hell knows...
Happily, Ridgewood Thai is a REAL business that actually WANTS customers. It's a small space with a big chandelier and some slightly exotic yet sophisticatedly stark decor. It's nice. I like it.
The food isn't up there with such luminaries as Sri Praiphai or Thailand's Center Point but it's WELL ABOVE AVERAGE. This is a huge leap for the area (although I admit I have not yet been to Long Lai on Seneca Avenue).
Ridgewood Thai leaves Thai Village on Woodward Avenue in the dust. How? Ridgewood Thai doesn't load everything up with buckets of sugar the way Thai Village does. When you ask for regular old spicy at Ridgewood Thai, guess what? It's spicy! Significantly spicy. No. More. BEGGING! (Thank you!)
The menu is limited at the moment and has mainly the old stand-bys that you'll see at any mainstream NYC Thai restaurant but hey, they're decently made (panang, massaman, fried tofu, all respectable). At present, the place doesn't appear to be pandering to the legendarily wimpy Glendale-Ridgewood palate.
I think Ridgewood Thai has raised the stakes. Maybe it will get all those Chinese slop shops along Myrtle Avenue to step up their game.
Death to nail salons!
Glendale is hungry...
