Buenos Aires seafood, Italian & puertas cerradas (10 nights)
Hello, happy 2012.
We are headed to Buenos Aires in late Jan for 10 nights. Have rented apt. in Palermo Soho, on Uriarte & Guatemala.
There are definitely opinions on parillas, or steak houses, and we have guide books as well.
However, wanted Chowhounds to help me on a couple of things non-steak related:
1) For first night, after long travel, what's best resto near Uriarte & Guatemala, for a first night Buenos Aires experience? (Parilla wud be probably good idea)
2) Lots on Chowhound about steak in BA, but wondering, what are the top 3 or 4 Italian places in BA, mostly mid-priced (let's say dinner for 2 with wine at US75 to 90). Is pizza as big in BA as some guide books make it out to be? Sounds like good cheap lunch option if so?
3) Seafood. Told it is abundant. What seafood places, maybe 3 or 4 recommended? Am told 2 such places are Jangada on Bonpland, & Dora in the Retiro.
4) Puertas Cerradas. Is there one or two that stand out above the rest? I know about Casa Mun & Salt Shaker. What about Coupage, Felix, Corrinne & Paul?
Appreciate any feed back. Gracias.
We were in Buenos Aires 2 years ago. Very much enjoyed Casa Felix and Almacen Secreto (another puerto cerrado). Other places we liked were Mundano (in Palermo Soho near where we stayed) and Territorio (in San Telmo) - wonderful lunch there. Juana M was also great for lunch. In terms of pariladas, Lo de Jesus (in Palermo) was ok, but I actually preferred Cabrera.

We also had little pizzas at a couple of jazz bars - Virasoro and Thelonius. Both were ok, and the music was great.

Don Julio, which is an excellent parrilla is right around the corner from you. Only had 1 seafood meal when I visited, but it was amazing- Osaka is a fairly pricey sushi place, but it's this cool peruvian-south american sushi fusion joint. Just outstanding.
We went for pizza at El Cuartito, which I'm told is an institution IN BA. I'm a thin-crust NY kinda guy, and this wasn't that at all, nor was it crusty deep dish like Chicago- kind of a doughy deep dish is the best way to put it. It was excellent, but I don't dream of meals there like I do about Osaka and Parilla Pena (go there and get the tire de asadao- absolutely amazing).

I also really like Don Julio as well as Las Cabras in Palermo Hollywood - La Cabrera is great but definitely US prices. Case Mun is tasty as is Cocina Sunae (another puerta cerrada). Sudestada in Palermo Holywood does a great lunch deal as does Bar 6. We love Piola for pizza - near Santa Fe and Av 9 de Julio.
We also had an amazing if super pricey meal at Osaka. Yum! And we went to Tegui for the tasting menu with wine a few weeks ago and that was really good food and an awesome experience.
