Hi, just passing through over the Epiphany and wondered if anyone could recommend a good local bakery to get a Galette des Rois?

I highly recommend Acadian Bakery for a king cake. http://www.acadianbakers.com/#King

The Galette is the original king cake from France made with puff pastry. It's a much less sweet cake and is different from the king cakes commonly found today.

Andre's has a wonderful Galette. I have attempted to make them myself but his is just so good that I gave up and drive across town to purchase it. Call first, they don't make that many each day. You can ask them to make you one or have them hold you one I guess. I've always lucked out getting there for lunch and grabbing one.

I think the River Oaks location is closed but the web site doesn't indicate that. I don't think they keep up the web site regularly. Best to call. Reading on their FB page the Rice Village location may have also closed. The phone number for the Uptown location is the same as the old River Oaks phone number. Seems they are too busy baking all those fabulous goodies to inform people what is going on. Gotta do some digging to find out.

Not a bakery, but a restaurant on the west side of Houston if you are near: Bistro Provence is selling these cakes. Here's the link:

I ordered one from Andre though it appeared he never actually took my order. Thankfuly someone else cancelled their order and despite my arriving later (after they had closed) the girl closing up shop stayed later to make the exchange. It was very god and I really appreciated her going above and beyond!

The Uptown location has always been a little hit and miss with customer service. It appears that is the only location still open and it saddens me. The one on River Oaks Blvd was always spot on. I'm glad it did work out for you because their Galette is very good and appeals to those that don't want an overly sweet king cake. If you get the chance again, try some of their pastries in the cold case - YUM.

Pretty tasty! Every layer had a different fruit center.
