Little Pepper--trying to get away from my favorites; Recommendations?

rschwim Dec 31, 2011 09:27 PM

Hello, all.

I'm looking for recommendations that are NOT the following (which I love)...

My usual dishes:
Cumin Lamb
Braised Sliced Fish in Spicy Soup Base
Ma Po Tofu
Tea Smoked Duck (under appetizers)
Crust of Cooked Rice w. Pork
Fresh Cucumber in Mashed Garlic
Dried sauteed String Bean
Dan Dan Noodles

What are you mad about that isn't listed above?

Just went Friday night as a group of 5. Try the cold noodles. Its a vinegary light sauce that is VERY good. We also had the double cooked pork, which was thinly sliced pork seved with leekes and scallions..a big hit at the table. Let me know what you order as I am looking for some new dishes as well.
Oh, almost forgot..the eggplant is garlic was also great.

This isn't what you're asking, but could you describe the crust of cooked rice with pork? always been curious about that dish, but haven't been able to get a good explanation from a server. And there are always so many other things to order, i haven't gotten around to trying it.

Robert Sietsema in his 2006 review said "deliriously good "crust of cooked rice with pork" ($9.95)—brittle cakes made with absorbent puffed-rice grains soaking in tart sauce. My friend Zak pointed out that the sauce had been emulsified, French-style. "I've never seen that in a Chinese restaurant before," he added.

Maybe this slideshow from my last visit will provide some inspiration. It includes the Shredded Pork with bamboo Shoots erica mentions!

definitely going to try it for lunch, any recommendations for best lunch dishes for a single diner?

No. You know what to order! Always tough as a solo diner in a Chinese place. . .

How would I know what to order when I've never been there! I don't think Chinese places are tough for solo diners...thats what lunch specials are for!

LP offers only 14 Lunch Specials - all $6.50 except the $6.95 Sichuan Double Cooked Pork. All come with Rice and Soup. Three to four are certainly American-Chinese dishes like Beef (or Chicken) with Broccoli and General Tso's Chicken etc.

Best bests are the Sichuan Double Cooked Pork, Pork Meatballs with Garlic Sauce, Gong Bao Chicken, Mapo Tofu, Shredded Beefy with Spicy Peppers...

I don't think they still offer soup with the lunch special....
I always get the spicy cold noodle app and the shredded beef with peppers lunch special.

Oh - their menu says they serve the lunch special with rice and soup, from 11 to 4. Maybe in practice they don't?

Last time I was there for lunch about a month ago the waiter informed me they don't serve soup with the lunch special anymore...

Pork meatballs in garlic sauce is where it is at for me these days at LP. Otherwise beef with green peppers, or shrimp with peanut and chile.

Crust of Cooked rice w/ pork sounds interesting though I'm usually there for lunch and I don't believe it's on the lunch menu. I've wanted to order off the regular menu, but when the lunch special is only $6 it's hard to deviate.

do they offer many standout dishes as lunch specials?

              2. Peter Cuce RE: rschwim Jan 6, 2012 10:38 AM

I don't think you can go far wrong ordering just about anything on the menu. Right now they have some seasonal house made sausage that's just delicious. I don't think it's on the menu - ask the staff.

Some of my favorites not mentioned yet include Ox Tongue & Tripe, Enhanced Pork, Tendon in Hot Oil, Home Style Fresh Fish w/ Minced Pork, their fried rice dishes, especially the Scallion Fried Rice and the Fried Rice w/ Sichuan Brined Vegetables, and their Wontons in Hot Sauce. I also recently enjoyed their hot pot w/ a group.

Thanks Peter. Loved the slideshow - especially the first photo of the aftermath! I have to ask, does LP now have showers? What a character in the bathrobe!

Haha, that was a day with a torrential downpour. That guy wandered in, picked up some take-out food, and left. Nobody batted an eye except me. If you've ever been to Shanghai, you see a lot of people lounging around or walking around with pajamas on, but the bathrobe is something special :)

Love that photo and the frogs are in keeping with the food theme. Maybe he is a refugee from the now-pajama-unfriendly Shanghai:

I can imagine the thought process that night as he was about to leave for LP to get his take out: Honey, it's raining out there, don't forget your bathrobe!

I only get to go to LP 4 or 5 times a year now but if you take out the Crust of Cooked Rice w. Pork (had it twice and it seems more about the presentation than the taste) from the original post and substitute either Double Cooked Pork or Enhanced Pork, that's exactly what we order almost every time.
Sorry. I know that doesn't help.
