Anyone know where to find hong zao jiang 紅糟醬 (red wine lees / red wine dregs)?

I'm trying to make a dish for this saturday and i unsuccessfully tried finding it today in chinatown at:
- hong kong super market
- New York Supermarket East Broadway (the one under the manhattan bridge): the guy here that i asked was pretty curt and told me he didn't know what i was talking about or what that was
- New York Mart (the new market on mott): i asked a woman here and she thought i was talking about dates even after i showed her the characters
- deluxe market (the big meat market on elizabeth)
- couple of random meat markets on grand

If anyone knows where to find it (even if it's in flushing) please let me know. Thanks!

  1. that's weird because I definitely have seen it under the manhattan bridge sold by the vendors outside (where they sell various things out of sacs); one guy had a metal set of shelves full of quart containers of it, leaned up against the brick wall. but, it's been awhile; I'm surprised you didn't see it even if you made it into the actual supermarket itself.

oh wait it was outside? i didnt bother looking outside, i only looked inside the actual market, i combed that place for like 30 minutes and i couldn't find it

that's a good tip, ill try to find it outside

Found it at a nearby 福州 restaurant in Elmhurst although cannot vouch for the quality. This is a fairly common Fujianese condiment/by-product (a general oriental supermarket might be of no help). Do you still need it?

it was surprisingly difficult given the amount of fujian people that are in manhattan ctown
