West End/Beacon Hill Drinks+Meal?

I have have and unexpected night at the Liberty 1/7 with my husband and no kids. Scampo is booked that night, and we just had a fabulous dinner at Rialto's, so I was thinking of not planning and trying to do a drink/appetizer/light dinner combination, maybe at 2 or 3 places within walking distance. Searched the boards and saw a recommendation for No. 9 for drinks then Grotto. I'd like not to have to plan everything out, but I might be unrealistic for a Saturday night. (Maybe it will be freezing and no one will be out.) I am completely out of the loop for anything new. I'd be willing to jump across the river also.

  1. The bar at #9 has a very good bar menu and worth having some appetizers or light dinner. I like Grotto; but there's no bar and I wouldn't normally think of it as a "light dinner/apps" type place. Maybe the bar at #9 and bar at Mooo in the Federalist or the bar at Beacon Hill Bistro (fireplace in the bar that might be nice)or Bin Enoteca. Finish at the Liberty. Your walk would take you down Beacon and the well lit skating rink..and then Charles. Stop at as many bars as your stomach and liver can handle..:)

When faced with planning a night like it sounds like you're trying to do. I like to start at the farthest place and work my way home. This itinerary would let you close out the evening with a nice walk down Charles St.

    1. other side of the common, but still an easy walk to the liberty, are the bristol lounge, troquet and bistro du midi. all with lovely bars for small apps.

i'd also just stop by in-person at scampo. they may have tables held back or from cancellations. you never know. while scampo and rilato both hew "mediterranean", they are very different.

A few of my favorites..I just didn't name them because of that potentially windy walk across the Common..:)

We were thinking of Scampo(same night); but rarely make rarely make a res (not just at Scampo) and prefer to eat at the bar. Ms 9 just doesn't eat that much and it seems silly to make a res and have her order an app only. Is Scampo's bar "diner friendly" like Biba was or not?

Slight hijack but this may be good info for OP too.

i have only eaten at the bar at scampo. there is also the "mozzarella bar" option there.

      2. Just more for the larder, in case you stick to closeby places>>it doesn't get much CH talk but Bin 26 Enoteca on Charles St. has a lovely menu and talented chef.( But I don't know about the drinks aspect.)
A taxi ride across the river would be Craigie on Main for both drinks and food, a big CH fav.

        1. Thanks for the suggestions. I was also hoping I could just land a bar seat at Scampo's. Their pizza is on a "late night" menu, so I'm fairly sure we can get that at the bar. (Maybe I'll see you there 9lives.)

Opinionated Chef, thanks for the link. I'm planning to plug a couple of numbers/addresses into the iPhone and play it by ear. I thought of Cragie, but the one time I tried to go their without a reservation it was a disaster. Once again, so much will depend on the weather.
