TTC Subway Dash & Dine 2011-12 Season

Here we are again huddled indoors warming ourselves over hot drinks and, with luck, even hotter dinners. As the snow piles up and the temperatures go down the same question arises all over the Toronto CH board. “Where can I dine without freezing my toches off to get there?” Here again is my (mostly) annual list of restaurants that are spike-heeled-running-distance from the subway.

This was originally created for the benefit of my girlfriends. We needed a list of places close to the subway to connect us without freezing us. It’s updated annually to reflect the new and the passing so as to not waste precious steps. It is not specifically a list of “the best” restaurants in town. Its main purpose is function.

While I’ve been to many of these I haven’t been to all. An effort was made to add adventure by having a few new ones to try along the way to Spring. I’ve done careful research of opinions on this board and elsewhere for intersections that I don’t frequent to create the newbie list. After all, I have every intention of taking my friends to these places.

It is by no means comprehensive. The grazing range for my friends and I tends to be east of Yonge and south of Eglinton. (This was previously a range lacking in the Wild West excitement, but I understand the vibe is picking up.) CH expertise for the subway stops not covered is very welcome as are restaurants I may have overlooked. This is a community project after all.

Mercatto got two and Globe three kicks at the can since they were smart enough to locate near a subway station repeatedly. One intersection has two good restaurants almost exactly the same distance from the subway exit. It’s good to live in Rosedale. All of them contribute in their own way to cut down on drinking and driving. Here are 63 ways you can leave the car at home and still enjoy a lovely night out. Good for them, good for us.

Happy holidays my friends and all the best for the New Year. My gift to you for all of the help you’ve given me over the years and the joy of having a good meal every time I see friends and family. Thank you.

A special thanks to Suresh for being the first to GoogleMap this. I wouldn't have had the patience had he not done it first.

  1. Glad to see Caffe Doria on the list. This is an excellent resource.

Happy new year to you and thank you for taking the time to do this. Very impressive.

    1. Great list, thank you! Unfortunately though, Bigabaldi's closed in October.

      1. re: katdog

That's a shame. I heard Bigabaldi's was pretty good and in a neighbourhood that could use a decent place.

Thanks katdog. I guess that closing escaped my notice.

      2. I'd add Tom Jones, Swish, Biff's & Jump to the King options. Beerbistro food has been so-so the last couple times I've dined there.

Would include Epic for Union- no need to go outside.

Would also add Japango and Frank for St. Patrick.

        1. C5 is only open for lunch now so I'm not sure it really qualifies

PLeast is a little distant from Pape to qualify for D&D status don't you think? when you walk right past Aravind to get to it?

          1. re: bytepusher

PLeast is quite a walk from Pape in cold weather. I'd think the walk from Chester to PLeast is slightly less effort during cold weather than the walk from Pape. The Palace Restaurant is right across the street from Pape Station, if standard Greek will do.

For Greek food closer to Chester than Pantheon, I'd choose Astoria (sticking to dine-in or take-out souvlaki) or Megas (sticking to veg & meat dishes). No need to cross Danforth. If you're willing to cross Danforth, Detroit Eatery is good place for breakfast close to Chester.

402 Danforth Ave, Toronto, ON M4K, CA

            Astoria Shish Kebob House
390 Danforth Ave, Toronto, ON M4K1P3, CA

            Detroit Eatery
389 Danforth Ave, Toronto, ON M4K1P1, CA

            Palace Restaurant
722 Pape Ave, Toronto, ON M4K3S7, CA

            1. re: prima

So true. Chicken souv at Astoria is cooked so well and so tasty. They marinate it just long enough without having it become spongy at all. The tzatziki is thick, garlicky and intense! Love it for that basic menu!

Grilled calamari at Pantheon will always be worth crossing the street for ; )

            2. re: bytepusher

At the Museum stop, bytepusher, it's lunch or death. Not a single dinner place until either Bloor St or Friday, whichever comes first.

                1. re: prima

yes, once or twice. it's ok, didn't strike me as particularly special. but decent for a quick lunch.

                2. re: Googs

Not that I'm endorsing the food but La Société is a short walk from Museum and they are open for dinner.

              1. Great list, adding a few more:

                Pura Vida
                Bloordale Diner

                La Bella Mangua

                Rebel House

                Monk's Table

                Queen Mother

                ST ANDREW'S

                BAY (Cumberland entrance)
                Caren's Wine Bar

                ST GEORGE (Bedford entrance)

btw Seoul House is more than a 5 min dash from Yorkdale

                2. Thanks for all of your suggestions so far. I'm tracking changes here:

Please let me know if you have trouble opening that link. What alpha tested well countless times before release now seems to have some quirks.

As for the changes, they are:

                  - The dearly departed El Jacalito and Bigabaldi's have been replaced by Roma Ristorante and, sadly, nothing.

                  - Swish by Han replaces the so-so Beer Bistro. Thank you prima. I knew BB had lost it's sizzle, but couldn't beat the proximity until Swish made the extra steps worth it.

                  - The fun and delicious Guu SakaBar replaces Insomnia.

I'm keeping Pantheon for, as justsayn points out, the calamari. You can shish anywhere. These people know how to handle seafood.

Given the (tempered) excitement about Pizzeria Libretto Danforth, I think I'll keep it. It's just a tad closer to Pape than Chester. Besides, if Pantheon remains, PLD has to stay listed as Pape. Let's put it this way: Much better than previous years when Il Fornello occupied that spot.

I'll give more thought to the other suggestions. These were the easy ones.

                  1. re: Googs

Sure, leave PLD for Pape on the Master Map. ;-) I have a feeling that people coming from the west tend to get out at Chester if they're heading to PLD, and people coming from the East get out at Pape.

Detroit for breakfast is my personal go-to for Chester station, now that I've tried the grilled calamari at Volos (which is my rec for Osgoode Station, using out the 4 Season's Performing Arts Centre entrance/exit during cold weather). Volos' grilled calamari trumps the last few orders of grilled calamari I've had at Pantheon.

Zorba's is a good place for late-night avgolemono soup (with extra lemon on the side) near Pape. ;-)

For Donlands, I'll add Rails & Ales for a pub with decent grub, and Square Boy for souvlaki.

@ortdavid: New column called The Metropasser. I'll eat in (or very close to) TTC stations. Black Camel 1st: bit.ly/ACccSj

And then there was this breathtaking mapping of New York City. Someone with more time than I should take a shot at a Toronto version.

As for this revision, jlunar, it isn't the first time one of us has been cribbed and it won't be the last. I gave the idea away for free in the first place. So long as it encourages fun with friends and discourages drinking and driving I'm okay with that. More power to them.

Heck, the TTC should make their own map and have advertisers pay for the spots. They can use the dough to lower my fare.

                        2. I'd add Milagro to the Lawrence stop on the Yonge line. Just 2 doors up from Steak Frites.

                          1. I'll be updating this soon for the 2012-13 version. If you have any suggestions for additions or deletions, I'd surely welcome them.

That's absolutely the plan. It's as though they heard our complaints about there being no food at that corner. Thanks a bunch though. I might have missed that.

Any subway riders out there know of any new spots you've tried in your travels?
