Family friendly midtown restaurant?

bmccnyc Dec 28, 2011 06:19 AM

We're venturing into the heart of midtown later today to meet some friends visiting with their kids. Cast of characters: 5 adults, 3 kids. Estimated dinner time: 5pm.

Any recommendations for anything midtown family-friendly, maybe even a little bit off the beaten track? Ideally would like to skip places like the big chains in Times Square...

Do the kids like Chinese food? Try Szechuan Gourmet. Their authentic Sichuan dishes are good (mapo tofu, cumin lamb, Dan Dan noodles, dumplings in chili soy). And less adventurous eaters can order Americanized Chinese standards (though they won't be nearly as good).

If you don't feel like eating spicy, some excellent non-spicy dishes to order are: Shredded Pork with Greenhouse Chives, Steamed Whole Bass with Ginger and Scallion, Shredded Pork with Tofu, and Sauteed Green Beans (vegetarian).

Thanks for the responses...I just thought I would check back in for any future readers...we ended up going to Dos Caminos at 3rd Ave and 50th, and had a very nice time. Certainly the fact we we eating on the early side helped, but the staff was very nice, bringing stuff for the kids etc. I'd recommend it for other families, as long as you can go on the early side.

Nice experience for the kids but the food is awful. There are better options where the adults can actually enjoy the food they are eating.
