I'm looking for good food this coming Friday night. Lively is great, but not so loud that conversation is impossible. Live in the W. Village, but am less familiar with places Eastward. Wrinkle: for medical reasons, I have to eat gluten-free. This is not a problem, usually, in a place with a reasonably ambitious kitchen, but it does obviate burgers, pizza, and so forth—and, sad to say, Asian food (soy sauce has wheat in it).
i know Tre on Ludlow Street will also do a GF version of any pasta dish on the menu (except lasagna), though i can't personally vouch for the food or atmosphere as i haven't been there.
BTW, if dinner doesn't run too late and you decide you want to indulge your sweet tooth, Tu-Lu's GF Bakery is on East 11th Street...i'd love to know if their stuff is any good.

A few ideas:
Caracas Arepas Bar -- arepas are gluten-free, as they are made from corn flour
S'mac -- offers gluten free pasta for all their dishes
Cafe Viva or Pala -- gluten free pizza
Kuma Inn -- Thai-Filipino tapas and I believe they have a separate gluten free menu
