Who serves a good roast duck?

Baron Dec 26, 2011 02:33 PM

one of my favorite dishes used to be roasted duckling with wild rice. It would often come flaming and have some kind of brandy sauce. Years ago there was a restaurant in west Los Angeles that specialized in duck. Elmer Dills used to rave about it. I've forgotten the name. Any suggestions of a restaurant that does a good job with roast duck?

I don't know if you are thinking about Chinese roast duck or not? But for me the best roast duck comes out of the places that do either "Peking" style roast duck or just the Sam Woo typical Chinese roast duck. This recent prior thread has some great suggestions: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/777603

I have to ask our fellow OC hounds about reports on Lien Hoa Deli (which reportedly specializes in roast pork and duck) what they say about this place? Is the one in L.A. Chinatown related?

Across the street from Lien Hoa on Broadway is Lucky Deli (which supposedly by the LA Times survey) was rated number one for roast duck.

I am sure that the OP is talking more about the classic duck l'orange which was traditionally served with wild rice. Some preparations called for the duck to be roasted with cherries and it was often served table side with some type of flaming liquor (e.g. brandy). That was the kind of dish one could find at establishments such as long-ago restaurants, such as Perinos. Have no idea where that would exist today.

You are right I see that Warasaw has it on their menu. I really miss the duck flambé. A delicious dish....needs a good wine to complement. Don't understand why it is not on more menues.

I really enjoyed the duck at Warsawa...served with spaetzle. Crispy skinned goodness.

Scarpetta. It was so tender and delicious. From their menu: ROASTED DUCK BREAST
organic medjool date puree, smoked shelling beans, tuscan kale & apple mostarda

Sounds delicious. Do you know if this a classically roasted duck breast or Magret de Canard?

Cafe Pinot does a great duck breast (with Sonoma Cty duck, not a Moulard duck)

This photo illustrates a typical Magret de Canard, which some consider roast duck breast. It is quite different from the classic roast duck which Baron was asking about:
