Celebratory dinner in or around Charlotte

lizzie69 Dec 21, 2011 03:19 PM

Hi hounds...My husband and I would like to go out to celebrate a special occasion in or around Charlotte (we live in Matthews), and are deciding between Halcyon and Lulu. We'll certainly consider other options if you have them. Interesting menu items (such as rabbit) and a "romantic atmosphere" are a plus....Thanks for your help!

Those are both excellent options. You can't go wrong with either.

As far as atmosphere, Lulu is the cozier of the two, as it's set in an old house and has a very quaint dining room. Halcyon has more of an open dining room with a great view of downtown.

As far as the food, Halcyon is probably a little more adventurous, and I would probably give it the edge as far as taste and presentation go. Lulu isn't far behind in taste, however, and is certainly some of the best food you'll get in town.

Halcyon also serves great, creative cocktails.

This Saturday? As in Christmas Eve? Better make a decision and a reservation pretty quickly. I'd pick Lulu too!

I disagree about Lulu being cozy. You would think it would be since it's housed in a small... well, house, but it's kind of not. I think Halcyon has a warmer atmosphere. And what made Lulu fabulous was the former chef & co-owner Marc Jacksina who isn't there anymore. Interestingly, he is the executive chef at Halcyon. So, I agree with ickymettle that Halcyon is the better choice of the two.

The hands down best cozy & romantic restaurant in Charlotte, in my humble opinion, is Fig Tree. Great food. Another option would be Customshop.

Whatever you choose, enjoy yourself and please report back!

Yeah, Customshop is fantastic. I had dinner there a couple weeks ago, and it was amazing. Customshop is a place that has gotten better and better through the years, unlike most restaurants. And Fig Tree is a great place for a romantic dinner; just be prepared to pay about 40-50% more than he other options.

Yea, Customshop is my favorite restaurant next to Halcyon. I love how clean and un-muddled their food is. They really do an amazing job of showcasing the quality ingredients. AND they have Iberico & Proscuitto hams sliced to order at the bar - LOVE!

Yea, Fig Tree is awfully expensive - but it's such a beautiful, cozy atmosphere and the food is great.

I'd love to go to Fig Tree, but it was just out of our price range. We made reservations at Lulu for tonight, can't wait! Thanks so much for your help, and I will report back tomorrow. Merry Christmas!
