Flat Top Burger Shop
Damn fine burger. I had the grass fed cheeseburger. It is a huge double cheeseburger. Think P-Terry's on steroids. melty american cheese and greasy thinnish but wide handmade patties. they have a single patty they sell as a jr. Also offer regular beef instead of grass fed for about a buck less. French fries are hand cut and crispy.
Burger, fries and a fountain drink for under $12. If you stick with a single burger and don't get the grass-fed you could probably get out for $10.
The vegan burger is good, too. Firm, crispy, slightly on the dry side, and a touch spicy. The fries were the first fries I've had in Austin where I didn't feel the need to add salt. It is on the pricey side for counter service, but I think you get what you pay for ultimately.

Had lunch there yesterday. Junior-sized grass-fed bacon cheeseburger and onion rings. I was frankly underwhelmed by the burger -- would have been hard-pressed to distinguish it from a whataburger in a blind taste-test. Onion rings were great, though.

Burgers are personal thing, so not everyone is going to love The Flat Top style. For me however, they have nailed the Texas beer joint/road house cheese burger. When perfectly executed with a correct searing of the meat retaining juiciness, and the onions smashed into the patty while cooking, cheese fully melted and wrapped tightly straight off the griddle then served hot--they are a thing of my burger dreams. I like the style so much I've tried them three times hoping they evened out their burger consistency.
The first trip was very good, but the double was too much to eat. The second was a single and a bit charred around the edges of the patty--too charred. Today I went to see if they'd reached their burger potential and they stuck the landing. It was the perfect melding of flavors that are imprinted on brain as to how an old school burger should taste. My friend who joined me on today's burger quest moaned as ate every bite. He commented that he was surprised that a burger could evoke the childhood memories of spending time with his dad, stopping for lunch in little burger joints around Port Arthur. The hand-cut fries were on today as well. Twice fried not soggy. O rings are the shoe string style --not thick, but fresh --much like Smash Burger rings, but better. I have yet to try a shake but one my previous dining companions said her strawberry shake was awesome and suck down every drop. Looking forward to the day that they will hopefully have some $2 long necks to wash things down. Lemonade is good but...

well said. I went back today for lunch and had the regular (instead of the grass fed) burger. Reminded me of Dirty's about 15 years ago.
The onion rings are outrageously good.
