back navigation malfunction

j
janniecooks Dec 15, 2011 01:44 PM

I'm running Chrome on a windows xp machine. If you open a topic and read the unread posts and want to navigate back to board by using either the back arrow or by right clicking and choosing back from the menu that is displayed, one returns to the board under review.

That back navigation does not work when you post a reply. If you post a reply in an existing thread the back navigation, either of the two methods, takes you only so far as the thread as it appeared before you posted a reply (at least I think so, it may go back not all, but display your reply). I noticed this behavior yesterday, and definitely again today. The only way to get back to the board you were reading is to refresh the board by reselecting it.

Clicking the back button a second time doesn't take you back to the board? When I followed the steps you described, the first click took me to the topic as it was before I posted, and the second took me back to the board.

Clicking a second, third, etc time, and clicking on the back arrow numerous times never brought me back to the board. I'll test it with this reply and reply back.

Nope, after posting the previous response, I first tried the right click, back which displayed this topic and my response (which is also different behavior - previously I think the response wouldn't be displayed to me until I navigated back to the board and re-opened the topic). I tried right clicking/ back three times. Then I tried the back arrow, again three times. Never got off this topic - could not get back to the board.

That's very strange, to say the least. I'll take a look when next I have access to Windows; thank you for the report.

Wondering if you've had the opportunity to take a look at this problem. Back navigation is still not working after replying to a post.

I just tested this (testing thread) with an older version of Chrome and had no problems. I then upgraded to the newest Chrome version and had the same problem as janniecooks.

This is what I found -
With the newest version it now takes three very rapid left clicks to get back to the board.
Right clicking slowly seems to do nothing.

janniecooks: I have not been able to reproduce it as of yet. However, I do not believe that I have updated Chrome on windows for a while now, which leads me to...

hannaone: Thank you for looking into that. You may be right; after poking around the Chrome help forum, the problem Jannie is seeing sounds similar to some known issues with that browser. The problem is slated to be fixed in Chrome 17, which is still in development.

thank you both for looking into the problem further; with the reply I'll try hannaone's fix. never occurred to me to check chrome forums, as CH is the only site where I've had back navigation problems.

three very rapid left clicks took me further back than expected! will see what happens on this reply post.

okay, three clicks was one too many. two rapid clicks on the back arrow returned me to the board in the position it was in before opening this thread. while I look forward to chrome fixing the problem in the newest release, at least one back navigation method works. Thanks again.

And a thank you to you in Engineering for removing the "last" navigator that was added recently to the bottom of each board page. I had previously opened a new topic on what I thought was weird behavior when clicking "next" only to realize that "last" was newly added and what I clicked on. I'm glad to see it is now gone again.

I'm using Chrome with Vista, and it behaves just as Engineering indicated: one click of the back button takes me to the thread, prior to my post, and the second takes me back to the board. Of course, I can also just click on the board name at the top or bottom of the page and return to the refreshed board.

The way Engineering indicated is how it USED to behave for me, until two days ago. Of course I could just click the board name and reopen the board, but using the back navigation takes me to the same view of the board I had before I opened the topic to which I replied; reselecting the board displays the board from the top. Minor annoyance, but I would like it to behave the same way it did until two days ago, and right clicking to choose back is more efficient anyway.
