Restaurant Rec [for a small office of 6 HOLIDAY LUNCH] in Flatiron/Chelsea/Gramercy/Union Square area

  • 9

We're a small office of 6 that is more like a family. We do a Holiday lunch every year and exchange small gifts. We're located on 27th & Broadway and prefer to travel away from midtown so Flatiron, Chelsea, Union Square and Gramercy is best. I recommended a few places to everyone but they got shot down for being too "uptight" (Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, Gotham Bar & Grill and Del Posto). So alas I have come to Chow for advice.

Here are the requirements:

- Open for lunch on December 22nd
- Near[ish] 27th & Broadway
- $35 or under per person (not including drinks)
- relaxed/fun environment (NOT UPTIGHT), we tend to laugh a lot
- varied menu for the picky eaters
- can accommodate a table of 6 people with gifts

Please help me out!!!

I think SD26 and Ciano may still be too "uptight" (formal) for this group if they've shot down GT and USC.

I'd personally do ABC Kitchen or Inoteca. Maybe Casa Mono if it isn't too far away.

I guess if you mean they have tablecloths, then you're right about SD26 and Ciano.

Casa Mono did come to mind, but I think it's way too cramped for six people with gifts. Tables are extremely close. Also so small that they can barely hold the food.

My first choice would be La Promenade.

    2. Wholeheartedly recommend Giorgio's of Gramercy (21st between Broadway and Park Ave So.) Excellent food and wonderful, friendly service. Price is very reasonable and the restaurant is very pretty and not overly crowded at lunch, although you should reserve for a group. Oh, and despite the name, food is more "new" American than Italian. You can find the menu and many wonderful reviews online.

      1. Thanks everyone - I printed out some menus and am going to show them to the group. As for Giorgio's - we order in from there all the time. I know for a fact they wont want to go there to eat. Thanks though!

I like the idea of ABC kitchen because we can shop afterwards or before!

I've only gotten pastries from Maialino and have never eaten there. Would you say it's too uptight for the group?

If your group thinks tablecloths = uptight, then the trattoria at Maialino would be out. Otherwise, it's got an upbeat vibe though the noise level is not as high as at ABC.

I never said tablecloths were uptight, I'm pretty sure someone just assumed that along the way.

So, if not the tablecloths, why did your office mates rule out USC, G.T., GB&G, and DP as "uptight"? I've always found USC to be *very* lively and relaxed. Same as Maialino. I would agree that Gramercy Tavern's dining room is much quieter though the Tavern Room is very lively. Haven't been to Gotham B&G in years, but I don't recall it being particularly quiet. Haven't been to Del Posts, but from what I've read, it's pretty fancy-schmancy, so if they want something more casual, I can understand ruling it out.

No clue, they are kind of close minded and have pre-conceived notions about things without further investigation. They tend to judge by the cover. We're casting directors, so that what we do.
