Playa Del Carmen with Kids at the Ferry

Going to have a couple of hours to kill waiting for ferry to Cozumel next week, where can I hang out with young kids and grab a bite? Unfortunately the kids aren't big on Mexican food (yeah, yeah, shoulda gone to Orlando, I know...). Is there anyplace with food we'd all like, and casual enough to hang out at?

  1. The ferry is every hour except 9 am and 2 pm, is the time you are killing 1-3? I would stick to the beach hotels and restaurants for F&B service, and your kids can do the beach thing. La Tarraya is on the beach 2 blocks north of the ferry dock, seating under the palms, fishburgers and a coke for the kids? Several places further north have club sandwiches, french fries, and other gringo food along the beach. There is nothing to the south that will be accessible. You could stroll 5th ave and see what interests you. Every restaurant has a menu outside. La Parilla on 6th St is a fun place for kids, but generally later at dinner when they have the mariachis and serve the flaming dishes. There is a Burger King at 8th. St., I hope you don't go there! It's all casual.

I believe there's a gap between 3pm and 5pm, and my flight gets in at 1:15pm, so I figure I'll just miss the 3pm, what with Cancun airport slowness and all. La Tarraya sounds OK. Hotel might be best bet.

    2. I'm sure there's a Senor Frog's, Shrimp Bucket or some such chain which your children would enjoy.

A Senor Frogs is at the end of the dock on the south side, but aside from their cutesy logo'd items, I consider it an overpriced place to swill beer in their overpriced plastic vessels.

      2. I'd recommend Playa Maya for lunch. It's a beachside restaurant, between 6th and 8th streets. It's a nice 5 minute walk from the ferry. For the adults, they have great ceviche, coconut shrimp, shrimp tacos and delicious margaritas. For the kids, they have club sandwiches and burgers. They're pretty reasonably priced, too. Plus, you get to eat with your toes in the sand!
