Chowfind: Matsutake (aka Pine Mushrooms) at Loblaws
A trip to the new Loblaw (Carlton), yielded a pleasant surprise: Pine Mushrooms (aka Matsutake). They have a great cinnamon aroma and were the freshest mushrooms on display, albeit pricey.
Other specialty produce including Buddha's Hand is also available. Hopefully they keep this up!

Any idea how much they are charging for them. Would like to compare prices with J-Town!
Thanks!

Wonder where they are from?!
If they cost around $1000 per pound then they should be the real 'Japanese' ones.
If only $100 per pound then most probably from China or Pacific NorthWest.
Anything in between, say $400 per pound, then could be high quality Korean ones?!

They grow in BC too Charles

I know, thats why I use 'Pacific North West ' to include both the States and Canada.

I recall something on the order of $44, I think they are Canadian.

Thanks!! If indeed $44 a pound, that would make it quite a bit cheaper than J-Town!
Last time I saw them at J-Town, they were selling two 5-6 inches long stalks for about $47! ( Two stalks = half a pound?! )

Jonas was that price per pound or the pack?

It was the price per pound. Cooked them up tonight, nice aroma - though I must say foraging mushrooms in the woods is a bit more rewarding!

Oh that's an awesome price. What did you make? I wish it was summer as the best way I had them was the most simple. Just grilled on coal and dipped in ponzu.

Oh that;s great if they are priced well I might get some for a Chawanmushi.
