Dec. visit, Aviary advice

  • 2

We are very excited to try to eat our way across Chicago the last few days of December. Unable to get a reservation at Alinea, which I had been wanting to do for years, but we'll eat well anyhow, I'm sure. We do have reservations for the Kitchen Table at the Aviary, but I was wondering if anyone else has done and can comment. It's $165 per person, so I hoped to get a little advice in case I want to save our dining dollars elsewhere. Will we still be hungry after that experience? Is it too much liquor -- I can't really handle more than 3 regular size cocktails and then only with sufficient food. We still want to experience the cocktail lounge at the Aviary, but not sure if the kitchen table is the way to go or if we should spend an equivalent amount on a tasting menu at another restaurant instead. Thanks for any thoughts. I've had fun reading this board for planning out the trip itinerary (for eating).

  1. Here is a blog entry about the Chef's Table at The Aviary, with photos included:

As you can see, it's not a lot of food.

I love the Aviary, and there are definitely drinks you can only get at the Kitchen Table (like the Rum drink in the bag, or the Scotch tasting), but some of my favorites don't seem to be included. I spoke to a friend who did the Kitchen Table in November and they didn't include the Cider, Chartreuse, or In the Rocks in the tasting.

Thanks for the info, very helpful. I think I might be best canceling the Kitchen table in favor of a couple of drinks in the lounge instead. I love a good cocktail but no one will love me after 10 of them!
