School House Cafe, Warner NH

Finally visited this new cafe is a remodeled old school house. It's handy to I89/exit 7 but, otherwise, is between Warner and Contoocook almost next to the Davisville Flea Market. Open to serve breakfast and lunch, later hours for meals to go. We had our two young granddaughters with us and didn't know quite what to expect but definitely didn't want a MacDonald's lunch.

We lucked out. Seafood chowder was the daily soup. I opted for a half chicken salad sandwich and a cup of soup. 7yo chose a bowl of seafood chowder and enjoyed it. My husband chose a tuna salad which came with a choice of sides. He chose cole slaw which I thought was very good. The cole slaw is in a creamy dressing but didn't seem like the usual mayo and vinegar type and it was nicely flavored with dillweed. Finding real cole slaw is difficult. This was a nice surprise.

Breakfast is available all the time which worked out well for us since the picky eater 5yo chose pancakes with chocolate chips. She raved about them but was only able to eat half the thick buttermilk pancake which I finished off for "dessert".

There are fancier sandwiches on the menu and lots of good choices for breakfast which I have heard is very popular. They also cater (Mink Hills Catering) and we enjoyed the desserts they made for the Tory Hill Readers series last summer.

Recently tried the Foothills of Warner through a Concord Monitor "daily deal". The food was really good. The homemade cinnamon toast was delish!

Thanks, dfrost...so glad to know about another "real food" option on our way from central VT to ME along I-89...will definitely try next time.

Thanks for the tip. I'm always looking for Sunday brunch places within reasonable driving distance (they are for me) that are open 'till 2pm. Hopefully at some point they will take credit cards..... cash-only isn't a deal-breaker, but I find it much less convenient.
