Don Bahia, Bird Rock. The last time I was there they had 99 cent fish tacos for happy hour which I think starts somewhere around 3pm-ish. It's one of my favorite places in all of San Diego. You can sit outside at a narrow bar and just catch sight of the ocean-- one of the few reasonable places in La Jolla to do that. There are also other bargains on the HH menu. This is a total locals place. Lots of surfers go for the HH menu and gorge. Lots of families and children, which is why I prefer to take my beer and tacos outside.

Plenty of places to get cheap fish tacos, not sure you'll find a .99 burrito, maybe Taco Bell, for which I'd opt to die of starvation. On the taco front, there's the Maricso's trucks at several locations except PL & OB, Don Bravo in LJ, El Zarape. Unfortunatelly, you'll spend more in gas, travelling to get those cheap tacos, than the tacos themselves. I'd recommend looking at some threads on this board and not go just on the price. Also, as far as the Marisco's trucks go, if you opt for a smoked Marlin or Goubenador (shrimp taco) or Tostada Mixta you'll pay $4.00 per unit, sounds like a lot but, one taco or Tostada, at least for me, is a pretty good sized lunch with the free fish broth.

One of OB's better Mexican spots is Ortega's Cocina on Newport Ave. They make fish tacos, and other dishes. Their food is good, though it's more expensive than the average taco shop.
Nico's, also on Newport, is a cheap taco shop, but their chicken rolled tacos are really good. Definitely recommend giving those a try.
Another interesting spot in OB is the BBQ House. They make a BBQ burrito with smoked meat, beans, and cole slaw. Definitely not a traditional anything, but tasty and filling. Their meat is actually pretty decent considering they don't have a proper pit BBQ setup.

Surprised no one has suggested South Beach Bar & Grill in Ocean Beach by the pier (5059 Newport). You will be VERY happy. Tacos are less expensive everyday during happy hour and on Taco Tuesdays.

Just for reference, good quality fish tacos SOB (south of the border) in Rosarito at a modest restaurant/stand are priced, not very much, but yes, over $1.00 per per order. The tortillas are small, maybe six inches in diameter. and if you want flour tortillas they cost a bit more.
Carne asada and adobada (seasoned grilled pork) tacos are at the same price point.

re: Gypsy Jan
Gypsy, the 99cents was because I saw many references of the mariscos trucks and happened to reference that price for the tacos only....
I don't expect a burrito for 99cents lol! I know they cost around $6 to $9 and if they are really good, that's what I'm looking for.Hope this clears things up, and you can recommend me some good places :)
Thanks!

At $.99 you get what you pay for and that's not much.
El Zarape up on Park Blvd. used to do $.99 that were pretty good. I don't think they're still doing them at that price and the quality has gone way downhill. El Zarape does lobster burritos but they are - and always have been - well over $.99.
Marisco's German's fish tacos are $1.00 but it's not the best fish taco in town by any stretch. Their gobernador is much better, but also not $1.00
Have never seen a carne asada burrito or carne asada fries for $.99. I've seen them around town for $4.99 but not $.99.
Point Loma and OB and even their surround communities are fairly affluent, most operators are going to go for the $$$ since they don't have to fix their price points at the lower end of the spectrum to stay in business.
Just based on the cost of food these days, if you're getting something for $.99 it's pretty much crap.

re: DiningDiva
Thanks DD!
I've seen lots of posts for 99Cent fish tacos... so thought i'd ask... but anything cheap for fish tacos will do...
for the burritos and Carne Asada Fries, obviously it will be more than 99c, sorry, should of worded it better...
i'll have a car, so we can drive not too far, as long as there's parking somewhere close for free.
hopefully this extends the search parameter! :)

re: DiningDiva
El Zarape's on Park fish tacos are still $.99 I got some there about a week ago. Not exactly generous with fish and there's probably more breading than fish, but still acceptable for $.99. But I far prefer their other items, like shimp or lobster burritos. Also finding a parking place now with all the other busy restaurants in that block is a royal PIA.

If you're mainly looking for cheap stuff limited by region, Yelp is probably a better resource.

re: DiningDiva
Justto clarify: I saw various recent threads and responses re: mariscos trucks with good inexpensive fish tacos. 99cents was referenced several times, but I'm not stuck on that price.
I'm on a tight budget, but I will not eat crap food lol.
I would rather spend more to get an amazing taco and burrito
However, sometimes you pay more because of the type of restaurant ( as in fancier) I would rather a really good mariscos truck if the quality is very good since I won't be paying for the "location".
I'm definitely not cheap, just on a budget. Just came back from Chicago and prior to that Spain and portugal, so $$$ is tighter.I'll welcome any recommendations for really good chow! Just can't spend more than maybe $10 per person.
Thanks again! Hope this clears things up :)
