Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in Ontario (including Toronto and Ottawa)

Eateries near AGO.

Hi, I am arriving for the first time in Toronto this afternoon and plan on heading to the free Wednesday night at AGO...can anyone tell me if there are any super eateries around there...we are after nothing fancy just tasty, cheap and cheerful. We love chinese, korean and japanese cuisine.

Thanks

  1. Moderately priced, not cheap, but not fancy

    Ematei (for cooked Japanese food)

    Japango (for sushi)

    Cheap, but good & tasty

Swatow (wonton mein, or Chinese Cdn)

Chinese Traditional Buns (soup dumplings and other buns)

Rol San (dim sum, ginger beef)

    Mother's Dumplings (soup dumplings)

Kenzo (for ramen, not much else is on the menu)

There is an economical Korean BBQ place near the AGO on Dundas near McCaul, and another in Chinatown, but I've never been to either place. I'd save Korean food for a trip to Little Korea (Bloor & Christie area), rather than order Korean food in/near Chinatown.

yea thats a great list for sure. if you are going for soup, noodles and dumplings personally i would really hit swatow before mothers. that being said rol san has great dumpling soup too!

re: Mother's Dumplings - I realized now that I accidentally typed soup dumplings when I should've written Northern-style dumplings. I usually order the steamed, boiled or pan-fried dumplings at Mother's. Mother's doesn't get the raves it received when it was new, but I still like their dumplings.

    2. I've got the joint for you: it's called Manpuku, and it's right next door and to the east of the AGO, among the indoor Village by the Grange group of fast-food restos. Though Manpuku itself isn't quite what I'd call fast food. It's a separate little resto with its own seating. Delicious Japanese-inspired soups and noodle dishes, and inexpensive. Popular with art college types, who keep it humming. I drop in whenever I go to the AGO. Mind, it has been some months since I was last there, though I doubt if it has changed. Solid, clean, well-run, with alert service. It's licensed as well.

I also recommend Manpuku. Where di dyou end up going?

      2. I know that it does not serve the asian cuisine you identified, but try dining at the restaurant at the AGO. It's called Frank and has been well reviewed on this board. I've dined there several times and enjoyed my meals immensely. Consider it, you won't be disappointed.
