December 16th “Free Fries Friday” at Burger King

rworange Dec 6, 2011 07:20 PM

Burger King changed their fries
http://news.yahoo.com/burger-king-deb...

They will be giving away a free value menu bag of fries on 12/16. No other purchase required.

I tried the fries today and liked them. They are thick cut, like In-N-Out but not as limp. They are crisper on the outside and fluffy and soft inside. However, they are cut potatoes and not formed fries.

I fell for their "new and improved" fries once... not sure if I want to risk it again.

Well, they are free on 12/16 ... so there is no risk there. And ... the last time they changed their fries was in 1998 ... that's quite a gridge to keep for something that cots a little over a buck.

I've had the new ones and didn't care for them.

          Exactly why not?

I gave reasons why I liked them.

Why? I like the new Wendys fries because the ones that I got were crispy and well salted. Like of like fat McDonalds fries. Are the BK ones not as crispy? Have a weird coating?

Even free they're still not worth it. How you can make a french fry that revolting is completely beyond me.

        Have you actually tried it?

There is not oen thing wrong with these fries. If anyone drolls over In-N-Out fires, these taste better.

I don't get it. Not only here, but on Chow articles posters leap in to comment on food they ahve not tried and trash it.

        The fries are good. period.

I do not ever comment on anything I haven't tried (unless it's a recipe that's piqued my interest and I intend to try), period.

I have tried them (I work steps from a BK) and I don't like them.

          I haven't had any In-N-Out fries so I can't compare them.

I do like the new Wendy's fries, you don't, each to his or her own.

I have to concur. I haven't liked BK's fries since they reformulated the recipe in the late 90s. I don't care for the coating (is it a batter?), and at least at BK's near me, they always taste of old oil. McDonald's are quite a bit better, to my taste. Wendy's olive oil fries are decent(ish).

ETA: upon re-reading your OP, I realized you're talking about yet another "new" BK fries. I'd try them. Buttertart, you tried the new new fries?

But of course. Wendy's and McD's are more to my taste.

The "coating" is why I gave up on BK fries last time. They simply didn't taste like potatoes, and the texture was odd and ersatz. And back then, the explanation was that the "coating" kept them crisper longer.

I would have been encouraged if they had said the new formula was MORE natural. Instead, they continue to try to prolong shelf life, which on its face suggests taste is not driving this move (again).

I'll try them, but I'm not holding my breath. The BK track record is awful. I also tried the "Chef's Choice" burger and had to throw it out. I'm no fast food snob - Wendy's is fine for me, and I like 5-Guys. But BK has been coming out with one clunker after another.

It's a shame that I don't have a BK in the neighborhood. I stopped eating BK after their last fry change. I remember their burgers and nuggets being better than McDonalds.

How do the fries compare to Wendys and McDonalds?

Would have given BK a second chance (especially since the fries are free) if I had one to go to. Thanks for the quick review, maybe next time I am in the area of one I'll try the fries.

MUCH better than Wendy's which changed this year and are gross.

I'm sort of considering getting the free BK fries on Friday and comparing them to McDonald's and In-N-Out.

I don't think they may have as much potato flavor as McDonalds. However, I never liked skinny fries.

When I tried them, the first thing that I thought of was In-N-Out. So it might be interesting to see which are better.

I had them. They were better than BK's previous fries. I didn't detect any type of coating like on their last ones. They reminded me of Wendy's old fries. Thickish..and salty and semi crispish.

Not as good as McD's ..I liked Wendy's old fries better...that's what these new Bk fries remind me of. I only had 5 guys once..and these possibly remind me of those fires they throw in the bag.

I liked Wendy's old fries better too. The new ones are not bad, just liked the others.

Thank you for posting your experience, as well as the info about the freebies! I know there are a lot of people who hate fast food fries, but I don't and I'm interested to hear what people think of these new ones. I will definitely try them, though I don't know if I want to deal with the lines that I assume will show up for free food. I may just swing by this week and try them.

FWIW, I've never been a fan of McD's fries, and I very much preferred Wendy's previous fries, so I have high hopes for BK's new ones. We don't have In and Out here, so I'm not sure how they compare to the others I'm familiar with, but I'm interested in trying them.

The free fries are the value menu size, so if you buy them they are only $1. I thought for that price it was a generous serving.
