best coconut cake?

mcm1900 Dec 4, 2011 10:28 PM

My brother's bday is saturday, and he loves coconut cake. Magnolia's version is pretty great, but I've gotten it for him in the past and I was wondering if there was any exceptional coconut cake in the city that I might be missing. Anyone know where to get the best coconut cake? Thanks!

All this talk about coconut cake prompted me to buy a slice when I happened to be by Balthazar this afternoon. Yum!

Minetta Tavern serves an insanely good coconut cake. Perhaps someone knows where they source it or if it's available whole.

Apple Cafe Bakery, 24 W. 8th St, in the West Village, has the best coconut cake I've had in ages.
          They're open daily 7 am - 11 pm, 212 432 4300.

A yellow cake with coconut filling between the layers. Frosted with gooey meringue and topped with shredded coconut.
            3 layer 9" $44
            3 layer 7" $28

I love Buttercup's coconut cake too, but will have to try the one at Balthazar's as mentioned above.

I've had all the cakes mentioned except for Minetta Tavern. Good Enough to Eat is what you want. If you don't live nearby, call ahead to make sure it's fresh that day.

Billy's Bakery makes a meringue coconut cake. If you willing to order outer boroughs, Baked does my favorite coconut cake in NYC.

Thanks guys! I tried to order from Balthazar but they're only making the 10", so I called good enough to eat. Hope he likes it!

Oh my gosh, meringue coconut cake, my two favorite things together.

                    Where exactly is Baked.

I love the flavor of the coconut cake at Billy's, I just wish it wasn't so sweet. If I'm in the area, I go to Doughnut Plant for my coconut fix.

Of the ones mentioned in this thread, I've had the ones from Billy's and from Minetta, at least twice each. There's no contest: the one from Minetta is (approximately) a kazillion times better.
