Bethesda Bagels Now in DC
I don't know how they compare to other Montgomery County purveyors, but these are the best bagels I've found in DC or NoVa. I'm not sure anything else is close. Coatings cover both bottom and top halves, so you avoid a half-sesame, half plain bagel when you slice them. Their garlic bagel is truly garlicky.
As a bonus, they offer mini-bagels as well as full size. The also carry quite a few flavors of cream cheese, chopped liver, and two types of pickled herring. Since I work nearby, this could seriously improve my quality of life.
Near Connecticut and S Sts, NW.

I had already decided to check this place out and then the Groupon came up - that sealed the deal. i went this morning and got a dozen bagels plus plain and lox cream cheeses. I also got a bacon, egg and cheese on a flagel, which was excellent.
The customer service at this place was off the charts. Granted, it was early and there weren't many customers at all in there at that hour, but the employees really went out of their way for me. They set up a couple of crates so I could sit down to eat my sandwich, gave me a free soda, brought me napkins, and gave me a 14th bagel on top of my baker's dozen.
I just finished a poppy seed bagel with lox cream cheese for lunch - delicious. Definitely the best bagel I've had in DC.
They had a lot of baked goods in there as well: doughnuts, Christmas cookies, rugelach, etc. which looked great - I didn't ask them if they were baked in house.
i was going to buy a container of whitefish salad, but didn't when I saw the price tag ... another time.
They said that they have plans to build counters with seating along the windows, which will be a big improvement.
Great place! I'm really happy it's there.

I also stopped by this weekend - bought some bagels - both regular and mini - AND some matzo ball soup for a family friend and got some soup and a flagel for myself. I LOVE everything flagels - best part of the bagel!
The soup was very good - in fact, for DC, I'd say excellent. However, the price tag was ridiculous. For soup. $10. That's far more than I'd ever spend on a large soup regularly, to be honest.
My grandmother, who made amazing matzo ball soup, was in the wrong business!
Agree that the customer service is great. They do a good job when it's busy of keeping track of you, too. Not easy when it's crowded!

Just checked it out for the first time today. This might be the best addition to the Dupont area in a long time. I got an everything bagel with chive cream cheese. In the future I'll ask for a light spread on the cream cheese (they really layer it on there), but otherwise it was a GREAT bagel.
The pizza bagels looked really good as well...looking forward to trying those in the future. This is likely to be my new go-to weekend spot.
Also Steve I also noticed that there were toppings on both the bottom and top of the bagel, which I greatly appreciated.
Has anyone tried their white fish or chopped liver? Hoping this is real deal Jewish deli quality---something severely missing in DC-proper.

re: Elyssa
you and I should open one as business partners because we're both very picky/experts in the Jewish deli world. you'd think in a city THIS "cosmopolitan" there would be one!!!!! Every time I go home, I'm so sad we don't have that close to us - the place we go at home even has an amazing pickle bar. For free when you eat there!
But yay for soup - maybe on Friday on my way home from the gym, I'll see if they have it.

Thank God! I haven't eaten store bought chopped liver in this town since moving here almost 9 years ago. I once had a sample at Whole Foods and almost had to spit it out on the floor it was so bad. Nice to know I have a place to purchase good chopped liver during the Jewish holidays, and in my own neighborhood nonetheless.

SO happy to hear about the chopped liver as well. It's going on 10 years for me (since I left NYC). Yeah, I know I can make it myself, but it's just not the same.
I am all set on bagels at the moment, though, but good to know for the future. I have a dozen (13 to be exact) Murray's bagels in my freezer, which I sliced and froze within 10 minutes of getting off the bus from NY. :-)

These are much, much better! I use to go to Bagels Etc if I absolutely needed a bagel. The ones at Bagels Etc are acceptable (although they do feel a little under cooked sometimes because they are so doughy).
Bethesda Bagel is the real deal. Delicious bagels (love how they put the toppings on the top AND bottom), with a perfect crust on the outside and chewy center.

I dropped by yesterday (also work nearby!) and I am pretty excited about this place. In addition to a large bagel selection, they also have flagels and bialies, and I was surprisingly happy with my Mediterranean sandwich (tapenade, feta, tomato, cucumber, lettuce). They did have an impressive selection of refrigerated stuff as Steve mentioned, plus some very large desserts. And they were giving free samples of the bagels and toppings. What a great addition to Dupont Circle. Important to note they don't have any seating.

re: hamster
crap, don't tell me this! I love love love flagels - everything flagels make the world a better place, but not my weight loss. UGH.
I am, however, so happy this is an easy walk from our place - I've already emailed my husband about it so he knows that garlic/onion/salt bagels will be as his beck and call when he returns.
So happy this is in our hood, and sad I'll probably wait to go so as to not get too addicted too soon!

This is good to know! Do you know if they have the same hours as the Bethesda location? The DC location doesn't seem to be on the website yet.
