Hearty bowl of soup near Carnegie Hall?

Can anyone recommend a place to get a hearty bowl of soup before a concert at Carnegie Hall? My first instinct was to go to Menkui Tei -- the chronically long lines at Totto Ramen put it out of contention -- but am looking for other ideas. I'm not stuck on Japanese and am open to all cuisines.

      Maybe French Onion at La Bonne Soupe or Benoit? I tend to prefer Menchanko Tei on 55th to Menkui Tei for hearty Japanese soups.
