Wholesale or inexpensive beer and spirits downtown

Hello Hounds,

I'm assisting with a party to be thrown for 150-200 people on Dec 8. Does anyone have any leads on where to get the best priced beer and spirits? Preferably in the downtown area, the party is on Layayette and Prince, but will travel for a deal! The party is for a non-profit organization, so they have 501 3c status, though I doubt that will necessarily help. Thanks for any suggestions!!

  1. New Beer Distributors on Chrystie Street does both retail and wholesale business. They have one of if not the best in the city. No liquor though, I don't know any distributors down there.

Cheaper but very far uptown would be Flair Beverages on 207th street. Their selection isn't as good but they have slightly better prices which could matter depending on volume and if you have a vehicle.

    Flair Beverages

    1. Check out Warehouse wines and Spirits (no beer I believe) on Broadway near Astor. I find the retail prices to be the best around and it's very close to your location. If you have non-profit status, they might cut you a deal if you ask.

Just so you understand: NY State liquor laws separate out beer from Wines and Liquors. You cannot have a license to sell both. So, as mentioned above New Beer Distributors for beer and Warehouse for Wines and Liquors. Both will deliver. NY charges 8.875% sales tax on alcohol, so the 501(c)3 designation will save you the Sales Tax (ask when you call or go what documentation they need for the exemption). I have no idea whether there is any savings on the federal tax, but the stores will know.

      2. I second Warehouse Wines. It's hard to beat unless you want to do the Trader Joe's wineshop in Union Sq. As for beer, another choice might be downtown Brooklyn. There's a place called American Beer on Court St in Cobble Hill. They carry a selection of beer and I believe kegs.

        1. Astor is good choice when it comes to variety, but you will need to get the beer delivered separately. Liquor stores in NY can't sell beer.
