Is auto-linking of Restaurants and Bars turned off?

Melanie Wong Nov 29, 2011 11:12 PM

In the last couple days I've noticed that there are many fewer links to the Restaurant pages. Is auto-linking turned off? Or more selective? If the latter, perhaps too restricted.

Here's one example of a post that would typically be filled with auto-links for the long list of restaurants. But it only shows the one link that I selected manually.

That would be a shame if true. I often send notes via the "Report" button about those place names that were producing auto-linking restaurants inadvertently/incorrectly. But that is definitely the way to handle the issue (hounds sending in reports on the words that set off the auto-link feature).

Auto-linking might be turned off; I just posted something and it didn't pick up either of the restaurant names in my post.

I was able to create the links manually, but I would hate to see auto-link disabled.

Thanks for testing it. I thought that perhaps my turning off many of the scripts used by the site might be responsible. But I've since noticed that new posts on the SF Bay Area board by others that include names of restaurants that should have triggered autolinking have not. So it's wide spread.

Yeah, I don't turn off or block anything from this site. I just suffer. I'm not getting autolinking much either. However, I don't like autolinking so that's fine with me.

Thanks. Per my post below, maybe we're in the middle of an experiment to see how many posters know that the manage your links tool bar even exists. Having trained users that links will automatically appear, wonder what it will take for them to make one more click to add them in. Probably close to the same number who used Places links before prior to autolinking, since no one on the SF board seems to have noticed the change other than you and me in this thread on Site Talk. Previously I had proposed that the manage your links be open by default so that autolinks were visible to the poster. The current set up makes it more selective than that move.

Auto-linking has been turned back on evidently without having to type anything in the manage links section (which seemed not to be the case for a while).

Per my post below, that part of linking continued to function.
                http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/8204...

What I meant by autolinking was automatically placing a link to every mention in the text box without having to trigger "manage links". That is not turned on.

Even the other type wasn't working for me until recently. Which was a step in the right direction. I am still sick to my stomach about the potential loss of the database and place links, so I will grasp at any straw to keep from despair...

To be strictly accurate, auto-linking has not been intentionally altered in any way since well before this topic was started.

Does that mean it was unintentionally altered is someway? I mean, it's definitely not picking up "key words" in the body of the post like it used to and linking restaurants of the same name automatically.

It's a bug, yes. Unfortunately, there are a number of potential causes and no clear explanation at this time. Our apologies for the inconvenience.

Thanks for sharing this info and ending my conjecture that a behavioral experiment was in progress!

Now, if you could please help us find a way to hold onto the part of the Restaurant database that are populated, maybe Servorg won't jump off the roof.

"...maybe Servorg won't jump off the roof."

I plan on jumping from the roof of my mouth figuring that my tongue will break my fall...

And we are all interested in whether preserving that part of the database created by the hounds is something that is under active consideration? What would the downside be if that were the case? Just getting rid of all the "bloat" and letting us villagers keep planting new, tailored flowers will be a plus for the site.

          Just tested my hunch here:
          http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/6731...

If one types a post and does not open the manage links section, it will not link to the restaurant named in the post.

In the post just below, I typed the same restaurant name and then opened the manage links section before hitting the post my reply button. The link shows in the dialog box and then links to the restaurant name in the post text.

So it looks like autolink is still set up but requires a manual trigger of opening the manage links setion, and presumably the eyes of the poster determining if the links are appropriate.

It's not working on Chrome on Lion. But works on Firefox on Lion.

I'm using Ad Block Plus, in case that matters. Still happening about half the time, regardless of whether I add the restaurant manually.

Noticing the text edit field is not aligned with the box underneath as I'm typing this.
