hors d'eurves (sp) for Christmas breakfast

Every year for Christmas, my B-I-L makes the oyster stew and I make the bacon and blueberry pancakes. Someone else scrambles the eggs, we pour the orange juice, and we sit down to breakfast (number and identity of people change year to year but it's usually around 10 or so). The problem is, we have to sit around, wait for people, I have to feed horses, and then we open presents and then we cook, so that it is close to 11 by the time we eat. By this time, some people are starving and have munched on stuff. I would like to have something that we could legally munch on before the present opening without impeding too much the hunger and delight of breakfast later. Since breakfast is already pretty much well rounded, does anyone have any suggestion for a special, make ahead carry one over till official breakfast type thing? Actually, I am leaning towards muffin/bread type thing; maybe a cranberry bread, but I don't know that it's special enough for Christmas.
Thanks!

My go-to breakfast or brunch dish is cheese strata because it's super easy, yet seems special. It goes together in a few minutes and can be assembled the night before in a large casserole dish or individual ramekins or muffin tins. In the morning pop it in the oven while you slice fruit, feed horses, or whatever else you need to do. I don't use a recipe, but this one looks similar to what I do: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/foo...

Well, you could have for snacks what we usually have for breakfast on days like that which is whatever anybody can scrounge. Banana Bread, cereal, donut holes, juice, toasted cinnamon raisin bread, plain toast, a turkey sandwich and my personal favorite... get the deviled eggs from the night before out.

I guess I just don't understand the problem.

Our big Christmas meal is typically a very late breakfast/brunch of huevos rancheros, tamales, beans and rice. Because we eat later (like you do), I make cinnamon rolls the day before. Take them out early christmas morning for their final rise, then bake them off. Usually one cinnamon roll is enough to hold everyone over until the proper meal is served.

well I need to eat breakfast and if I had to wait until 11 that would suck so I see your need. Could you have a pot of oatmeal on the stove with an array of toppings?

Yum to frozen choc croissants, which my sister could get as she has access. And I've been thinking about making a black fruit cake and thinking that it would be great for early breakfast. I also just found a recipe for Fontina Risotto Cakes on Epicurious that I'm considering. They wouldn't be sweet and they are rice rather than flour, so it's another food group....

Maybe "squares" of some sort. A fruitcake like bar made in a 9 x13 pan might be easy to eat and wouldn't need to have butter.

If you have access to Trader Joe's (or another store that might have these) the frozen chocolate croissants are great.

You do have to remember to take them out of the freezer the night before and let them sit out overnight on the baking sheet to rise, but then just put them in the oven for 20 minutes or so and they are delicious. Definitely a special treat, but they are small enough that they won't ruin peoples appetites for a later breakfast. The best thing is they are almost no work, just remember to take them out the night before.
