Thanksgiving Weekend in Monterey Recap
Traveled to Monterey from the SF Bayarea for the weekend. Started with Thanksgiving dinner at Anton & Michel in Carmel. The selling point for me was that the regular menu was served in addition to a traditional turkey dinner. DH had the turkey, which to me looked like turkey but it was just what he wanted. Light and dark meat, traditional dressing, mashed potatoes & gravy, cranberry sauce & veggies. He started off with butternut squash and ended with espresso chocolate creme brûlée which disappeared before I could try it. I had the French onion soup which was delicious. I appreciated that the cheese wasn't so thick that it was difficult to eat. My entree was the broiled sturgeon topped with herbs, tomato risotto, and veggies. The fish was cooked perfectly but the risotto was very bland, not the rich & creamy prep that I am used to. The lemon tart wasn't tangy enough for me but still good. All in all I would return.
Friday we ate at Fandango in Pacific Grove. It was a return trip after many years. We started with a house cured smoked salmon. It didn't have much taste.we shared a caprese salad. I was leery of tomatoes in November but they were very flavorful. DH is still talking about the paella. It was
Loaded with shrimp, sausage, chicken , and i'm not sure what else. My osso buco was very tender and the tomato sauce light. A half bottle of Ridge zin finished off the meal.
Saturday we headed into Carmel. We split a speck, Gorgonzola,and arugula panino at cantinetta salumeria and ate it in the park next door. It was very good.
Dinner was at 1833 in Monterey. Had a very good version of a Moscow mule. The highlight of the evening was my gnocchi with chanterelles, arugula in a Parmesan sauce. The crispy croutons were a great addition. DH wasn't too happy with his duck pasta, not enough duck. The space is lovely.
All in all a great weekend of dining.
We have been in the area alot lately on business, this past Sun. and Mon. nights we were at The Plaza and enjoyed some excelelnt meals in the area. Restaurant 1833 is my new love, we have dined there twice now. I love everything about the place, especially the Cheddar Bacon Biscuits with Sea Salt and their awesome Hamachi appetizer. Crystal Fish was very good for lunch, dinner at The Sardine Factory in the Captains' Room was also perfect. I adore their Abalone Bisque there! Massaro & Santos was also excelelnt. They offer a lunch special which includes 3 courses for 12.96 which is a great deal.
In Carmel, we tried Le St Tropez and were very impressed with their food, also. They offer a 3 course meal for $35.pp, Our lunch on Tues. at Monterey Fish House, not so good. It was our worse meal of the trip. :)
