Hi randyjl, In Athens itself, there is a really good cafe, Athen's Cafe. I love their Camorones a la diabla (spicey hot shrimp). My husband loves their pot roast and meatloaf. The meatloaf is a Tuesday special, so if we are there on a Tuesday, that's what he gets. They also swear to having the best chicken fried steak. I can't judge that, as it's not something I eat.
Tyler does offer more choices. But these days, you have to look pretty hard to find something that is not a chain. Gilbert's El Charro has great Mexican food and is family owned. I used to prefer the old one downtown, but the management has changed (the brother that ran that was retired, and his sister took over), so if we go, it will be to the one on 5th street. There are a number of really great authentic Mexican restaurants in Tyler.
