Food Bar (Petaluma) - Very good sausage sub!

I stopped in the newish Food Bar in downtown Petaluma late this afternoon after a disappointing try at getting a tri-tip sandwich at Lombardi's made with meat fresh from their cooker (they wouldn't do it, so I left). The Food Bar is in the downtown location where Lombardi's once had a place. I had their Sausage Sub (6" version, $7) described as having sausage, provolone (I think), onions, peppers, and marinara sauce. It was a really good sandwich, if a bit messy. The ingredients were high quality including the excellent marinara sauce. It came with a serving of possibly the best potato salad I've ever had. This was high-quality food instead of standard deli fare.

  1. Good to hear something is good there. My disappointing experience was at Food Bar.

Of the NY Sub list, I say skip the Combo - mortadella, salame, sopressatta, lettuce, tomatoes, onions provolone oil & vinegar dressing

On the plus side, they heated it in a toaster oven so the bread was crispy. The sandwich was put into the oven open. On the minus side, the guy making it kept opening the oven and patting my salami with the palm of his hand to see if the cold cuts were warm. After feeling it up three separate times, he decided it was warm. It wasn't. The cold cuts were still cold. Maybe his cold, ungloved hands cooled it down. They then threw some shredded iceberg on it. I don't remember the tomatoes. I didn't think the cold cuts were anything special and the $7 price was too much.

The sausage looked appealing, but was more than I wanted that day. They also have homemade meatball so that could be good.

It seems from this article written before opening, that the focus of Food Bar is salads. They did look good.

"Lori Shea plans to open Food Bar, a restaurant that will create an entire menu around salads, using knowledge she's gleaned from opening seven other restaurants in Petaluma since 1978."

Other restaurants owned by Shea include Blu American Eatery, Sugo Trattoria and New York Subs (now, Super Subs).

This is in the old Lombardi's Downtown shop, near Petaluma Pie and Della Fattoria
