Good food and cocktails until 1AM or later

pollystyrene Nov 26, 2011 03:31 PM

I find myself picking people up at the airport at 10-11PM a lot, and since I don't live right in town, as long as we're there we like to take advantage. As much as I like both Eastern Standard and Gaslight (and am thankful for all they offer, including late hours), I'd like to add a couple of places to the rotation. Do you know of any other restaurants that serve both good food and cocktails at least until 1AM? (Places that stop serving food at midnight don't count!)

Any thoughts of parking near there? I never find street parking and I don't know of any other options.

If you're driving, Franklin Southie is barely a mile away and has ampler nearby street parking. Generally easier to get a bar seat, too.

A very good point. Any discernible differences in attitude, chow, etc.?

I have friends who prefer the food and drinks at the Southie location these days, even though the South End one is closer to them.

Here's my current late-night list. Obviously, not all of these feature cocktails. This is a snapshot and not utterly reliable; restaurants change their late-night hours all the time. Also, kitchens often stop accepting orders 15-30 minutes before these end-of-service times.

a fabulous list, MC, and I know we disagree on this but I'd add Golden Temple which serves till 1 on weeknights and until 2 on fridays and saturdays. great bar, very good chinese american (I know, I know, I'll hear about it soon!!).

Thanks, teezeetoo! I don't think beggars can be choosers in late-night Boston. And anyway, Golden Temple isn't terrible, just not my favorite American-Chinese for the money, but it's not hard to find something decent to eat there.

I probably could have included a few more Lyons Group and Somers Group kinds of places, many of which serve something to eat until 1am, and they're everywhere. I also included a few places I wouldn't eat unless really desperate and/or hammered, like Adam's and Moon Villa.

It's also worth noting that many Chinatown places will call it a night early if it's slow enough. Caveat edax.

Yowza, Slim! Thanks! Since I'd posted the question, I'd come up with Via Matta, Abigail's and Citizen Public and thought I was doing well. I'll carry your list with me 24/7. I emailed Citizen Public and they said that although the bar closes at 2, they stop serving dinner at 1 and serve bar snacks until 1:30, an example of your ever-changing hours observation.

Between Via Matta, Tico, Lucca and Citizen, any opinions on which offer the best food and cocktails? If you weren't desperate, would you skip any of these four?

Hey MC, GREAT LIST. TV Diner is doing a Late Night Dining Destination this Saturday that we shot the night b/f Thanksgiving. Between this killer list, Devra's G feature on Wednesday and TV Diner - apparently people are looking to stay out late. One thing coming up on the show this weekend is great for folks who are coming from out of town and staying at the Radisson or the W - South Street Diner delivers to the hotels through the night.

The Abbey in Brookline. Full dinner menu till 1:30. I'm impressed that there's a critical mass of people ordering bison bolognese at 1 a.m. on a Tuesday in Washington Square to support this, but I guess the place is really small.

Hot on the heels of this thread, The Globe just did an article on late-night spots favored by industry folks (you can jump the paywall by going via Eater Boston: http://boston.eater.com/archives/2011... ).

Lots of expected favorites -- the Franklins get mentioned again and again -- though many of the ones cited (Lucky's, Silvertone, City Table, Salty Pig) don't serve very late, 11p or 12a. But it added a few more to my list:

                        2a
Solas -- one for the faux-Irish pub bucket
Tasty Burger -- should have remembered that one

                        1a
Red Lantern -- decent if you order carefully, like, avoid sushi and Peking duck
The Beehive -- though I'd put that in my "drunk or desperate" category for food

Surprised there were no mentions of Chinatown haunts, but given the number of mentions of Fernet and PBR, I suppose I shouldn't be.

Now your list is complete! Thanks for the link. I think there was a passing mention of Chinatown and how those in the industry are glad for the newer alternatives. I guess Chinatown was just never bad enough to be ironic like PBR.

I guess that once again it is up to me to harsh the mellow.

There are far fewer folks up late than there were 5...10...15...20...or 30 years ago. People take work and school far more seriously than they once did.

The proliferation of high end food delivery has made 'Open Late' an archaic notion.

Please read COCKTAIL by Heywood Gould and KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL by Anthony Bourdaine for the real story of the results of having an industry crowd.

The G article on where the industry goes after work fails to mention the fact that the non-industry crowd will wind up dealing with a lot of drunks.

Tasty Burger is a very dangerous venue.

Vinh Sun in C-town is also open till 2 AM. Did I miss it on your list, MC?

Early morning in C-town--you can get congee and coffee, maybe some buns and pastries as well at Great Taste starting at 6 AM. Maybe Crown Royal bakery in C-town as well.

Not particularly chowish, but Au Bon Pain is also open for breakfast by 6 AM.
