Pubbelly or Yard bird?

If you were me would you go to Pubbelly or Yard bird tomorrow? Love to eat and have not tried either yet.

  1. I've only been to Yardbird a couple times. Fun place but the food has for the most part not wowed me. I think Pubbelly's more interesting.

Pubbelly is certainly more interesting. I think the food is good enough at yardbird that it would depend upon what mood you are in when you choose between the two. I also would not quarrel with anyone who says yardbird is better.

Not to make the decision more complicated but the other pubbellies (sushi and barceloneta) are just about as good as pubbelly itself. I had a pretty amazing suckling pig at barceloneta last night.

      1. re: tpigeon

So two issues. Taking my 13 year old and Pubbelly does not take reservations. Will the food be too far out at Pubbelly for the kid?

        1. re: mom2mateos

Both good points. My son loves Pubbelly but my daughter has struggled to find anything she likes on the menu. Yardbird's a much safer bet that way. And when I say I've not been "wowed," that's not to say the food at Yardbird is bad; mostly been good but not exceptional.

          1. re: Frodnesor

You could also do barceloneta, which is more straightforward than pubbelly and just as good. Plus the seating is better. Same ownership as pubbelly and right next door.

            1. re: tpigeon

I probably need to give Yardbird one more opportunity because the consensus on this board is that the restaurant is very good. The one time I went the food was really bad... It wasn't even close to being good.

I have been to Pubbelly several times and have never left disappointed. Barceloneta & Pubbelly Sushi are also very good, but the original Pubbelly is still my favorite.

I just had brunch at barceloneta and it was excellent. Much better than yardbird's.

By the way, lots of people tend to skip dessert at Yardbird because the food is heavy which is a shame because I think it is what they do best, particularly the beignets. If you are at all into sweets. They are a must have item.

                1. re: tpigeon

I skipped dessert the first few times for that reason, but then got the beignets (pumpkin apple beignets that day) on the 3rd trip, which were incredible.

While I enjoy the soft serve ice cream at Pubbelly, they aren't really anything special. If you are a big dessert person, that may tip the scales in favor of Yardbird over the Pubbellies (at least the original).

                  1. re: Fineas

Yardbird does outclass all the pubbellies in terms of desserts.

    2. Which of the group would you guys suggest for a solo diner willing to eat at the bar and will arrive for dinner when they open? All the food sounds interestingbut I wonder if one is best for a single.

If you want to eat at the bar, the answer is the pubbellies (original, sushi, barceloneta). The bar menu at yardbird is limited.

        1. re: stuartlafonda

If I had to compare, I'd say the Pubbelly bar is more for eaters and the Yardbird bar is more for drinkers, but at either one you'll feel perfectly comfortable eating as a solo at the bar (I've done so at both).

TP, you can order off the entire menu at the bar at Yardbird.

          1. re: Frodnesor

good to know. They must have changed it recently.

            1. re: tpigeon

I was there about 2 weeks after they opened and ordered from the whole menu at the bar. The drink I ordered was not good, not to mention that the drink advertised a high quality spirit as an ingredient only to have a low quality one poured instead (the drink was made right in front of me). Be aware that they will also charge a $2 upcharge for any spirit consumed on the rocks or neat. Food was pretty good at Yardbird.

Pubbelly I think the food is pretty good but expensive.

Both places have small bars (Pubbelly & Yardbird. I've not been to the other Pubbelly sushi and tapas spots) but I would say Yardbird's is more comfortable to eat at strictly from a space perspective.

            2. re: Frodnesor

Thanks for the perfect answer, so I will trouble you a bit more. How does Barceloneta and Sra. Martinez measure up to my needs? TIA.

              1. re: stuartlafonda

Barceloneta and Sra martinez are pretty close foodwise. I would rather eat at the bar at martinez.

                1. re: stuartlafonda

Barceloneta, like Pubbelly, has a pretty small bar - about 6 seats maybe - and fills up quickly. Sra. Martinez' upstairs bar is tiny but the downstairs "bar" has about 10-12 seats and is a great place to eat. Not actually a bar but is the cold prep area for the kitchen with counter seating in front (used to be a sushi bar).

I think the food at Sra. M is better than Barceloneta right now. I've had some good things at Barceloneta and it has some promise but execution is inconsistent right now.

                  1. re: Frodnesor

I have not had the same issues as you did with barceloneta. I will say nothing at barceloneta is as good as the garbanzo beans at sra martinez, but the other dishes match up pretty well.

            3. Yardbird takes reservations and is larger so you have a better chance of being seated, probably better, more familiar food for kids. We did not have a great experience there - 4 of us on a Thursday evening around 6pm, high top by open kitchen. Ordered drinks and bottles of wine, which was better than food which was only ok. Service was intrusive and rushed. Items came out randomly, though we waited to order mains until we had almost finished small plates. Fried chicken not crisp, had been kept in warming oven. Sides came out after chicken finished. Wanted to love it, but didn't. Will probably give it another try, maybe at lunch. Easy to run up a tab for food at pub belly as everything is extra, even bread. Again, good, not great IMO.

Thank you for all your input. We ended up at Pubbelly sushi by mistake. However, it was very good. My son ended up ordering california rolls but they were very good. Fresh and real crab. My husband ordered the salmon which came in perfect squares kabob and wowed him. He doesn't usually like sushi or salmon but was very happy with the meal. I had the hamachi jalapeƱo which I loved. The wedge salad was extremely fresh and the dressing was outstanding. We also ordered the soft-shell crab, tomato burrata salad and the ribs. There was something for everyone and it is not run of the mill sushi although you could order standard sushi fare. Next time Pubbelly itself.

                1. re: mom2mateos

Next time try the snow crab roll with clarified ponzu butter.
