Seeking good tapas bar with at least a few good veg options

Organizing an after-work outing and need to accommodate 1 vegetarian and 1 person who doesn't eat meat but does eat fish. Anywhere south of Central Park will work. Checked a lot of online menus from hunting on google, yelp, urbanspoon, etc., but except for one place in Bay Ridge (too far) nowhere seems to offer enough choices for the 2 people with restrictions. Any suggestions?

  1. How many choices are "enough" choices? Are you counting cheese as a possible course?

In general, Spanish tapas won't have a huge number of vegetarian options but there are some like pan con tomate, salads, padron peppers, papatas bravas. Did you try Boqueria or Casa Mono?

    1. It's not as strict a tapas place as Txikito or Boqueria, but Mercat has quite a few vegetarian options; they have a section of the menu with rice dishes, most of which are vegetarian. I haven't tried dishes from that section of the menu, but we did have a good experience overall when we went there.

      1. I love Bocqueria
there is one is chelsea and one in soho. Both amazing. U can only book a table when you are more then 10 and then you can have their chefs tasting menu for $40 and believe me it was a lot and everything excellent and yes vegetarian options too.

Boqueria takes reservations for groups of six or more.

          From their site:
Parties of 5 guests or less are accommodated on a walk-in basis.

Reservations are available for parties of 6 or more.

All large parties are provided the Chef's Menu; an assortment of tapas and raciones for a fixed price of $40 per person. This assortment consists of a selection of our most popular tapas as well as daily market specials and is composed by the Chef. We will, of course, accommodate requests and guests should make any particularly desired (or undesired) dishes known to their server.

well Sorry Karthryn thats just my experience. They did not take my reservation for my bday unless its 10 peeps and chefs menu. I didnt study the website just my real life experience.

        2. Thanks for the replies to-date. Based on the web sites of the restaurants mentioned, it looked like Casa Mono didn't have enough veg options. Mercat looked like a possibility, but it also looked expensive. So Minnie C and I went to Boqueria (Spring St branch) this evening to do some scouting. Stuck to veg and fish options, although a meat dish at the next table smelled fantastic. The bottom line is that between the salads, the cheese offerings and the veg-only tapas (spinach, mushroom, potato, omelet) -- plus some good options for the fish-eater in the group -- I think it'll work just fine and I'm grateful for the rec. It's also worth noting that, in addition to the regular menu (happy to say that the web-site was pretty accurate in that regard), they had a list of specials that was almost as long.

Our waitress said that she works in both branches and likes the one on 19 St better. She said that Soho gets a lot of tourists (a couple from Montreal was at the table next door to us, and when they left, a 5-some of Brits took their place) and it's louder and more hectic. But they did have a good-looking space for a large party in the back; don't know if 19 St does.

My only complaint was that the entire restaurant has stool seating (even the banquette is elevated), which I found a bit uncomfortable, but not unbearable. We'll be back for the sausage and the bacon and the seafood paella, etc.
