Christmas Day in HK - where and why?

My in-laws will be with us for Christmas this year and as we're new to Hong Kong, we're not sure where to take them on Christmas Day for a special lunch / dinner.

I've looked into the various hotel options as they seem to do the best 'festive' options, but $1000+ per head for turkey (admittedly a Michelin-starred one) just seems crazy. We're not totally locked on the idea of western food, so would a Cantonese meal be a better option?

The in-laws love good food but have fairly traditional British tastes (ie no 'weird' seafood like abalone) and are pretty frugal (the idea of spending $1000 per head would appall them)

Where would YOU take your family for Christmas in Hong Kong and why?

  1. This might come as a big surprise to you! But this 'western holiday' to local ' Chinese' Hong Kong residents is a huge huge thing. Just take a look at the elaboate X'mas lightings on all the buildings!! People do not mind going out of their way to spend and celebrate on a fancy 'Christmas Meal'. during this festive season! As such, ALL top hotels will feature extravagant Christmas meals/events at exuberant prices and most probably will be fully booked by now!! Your better bets for a western meal will be lower 2nd tier hotels. But, with only a month before the big date, even table at those will be hard to come by!!
Based on your criteria and budget, I think going Chinese is definitely the way to go. Try checking out a 'Lei Garden'...etc. You can avoid 'weird' food by ordering a-la-carte!! I would get yourself a WOM guide, a Michelin guide or go on openrice.com to get more ideas!
As for your last question, most Hong Kong families would like to have an elaborate 'buffet' lunch at relatively fancy hotels like the Intercontinental, Shangri-La, Conrad...etc. For a larger group, lunches is a more economical way to go!
