Grand Electric

Who's going? Sounds amazing.

Good news and bad. The good: Walked in last night around 7:30 with two other people and got seated right away. The bad: I didn't think it was possible, but this place is getting louder and louder. We could barely hear anything, including our server.

Went for lunch the other day. Love that I don't have to wait. Scrapple Taco is still delicious. Music still loud, but I could ignore since I was on my own and not trying to converse. Didn't seem as loud as on previous visits, at any rate!

Isn't it awesome @ lunch!! I'm so glad you finally went! It's a completely different experience. Love not having to wait in line! When I went though, the music was fairly quiet. Maybe they've pumped up the volume since then.

FYI, Grand Electric is closed May 6-8, 2013 for renos.
        Electric Mud still open.

I'm very excited about going on Monday for lunch, so I went to look @ their menu online, but alas, they don't have one. I did however come across a whole whack of pictures:

                          http://www.urbanspoon.com/rph/10/1632702/747777/toronto-grand-electric-pozole-rojo-photo

I wish I'd got your message earlier jlunar or I would have taken pics :) Next time, because I'll be back.

It was my 1st time there today, and the food was delicious! I got there @ 11:30, and the place was empty. I think within the 45 minutes that I was there, there were 2 other tables and one person @ the bar.

We started with the guacamole and chips, which were delicious...as was the salsa that came with it! And then I had the spicy chicken tacos...again, really yummy. I got extra guacamole to add to my tacos, because I'm a guacamole fanatic. My friend got the fish tacos and the fish sandwich. She loved both. Overall, it was a great experience!! That being said, and I know this is sacrilege, but I think I kind of prefer Playa Cabana to GE. Oh there...I said it ;)

However, for those of you who want to eat there and don't want to deal with the lineups, go for lunch :)

just tried seven lives today--grand electric is great, but seven lives is putting out better tacos right now. their baja fish and their carnitas are both better than the equivalent ge taco. . .not to mention, the 7L tacos are much more generous with their fillings. plus, the extra spicy salsa has much more kick to it than what ge or bmb offers. the only fall down with 7L was their tortillas--a bit flimsy and the masa wasn't holding together that well.

admittedly, for unconventional 'tacos' tho, the ge 'scrapple' taco is decadent. . .

Was it really 45? We go by late on Sundays and they always say it's 45 but it's usually more like 10 or 15.

We go order a drink somewhere and always end up gulping it down as the call usually comes in mid-drink.

I finally made it out on the weekend. Showed up at 5:30 and joined the line for 6pm opening. Sat at the bar, service was good/friendly/efficient. Enjoyed 5 tacos in total including the spicy chicken, beef cheek, baja fish, corn, and "scrapple" (sp?). All were really good. I was expecting the music to be even louder than it was based on comments here. I am glad it wasn't louder than it was but I was expecting it to be really bad! Anyway, overall a good meal and I will try to go back. Not sure I will "wait" an hour plus for it again but if I have reason to be in the area and friends want to go grab drinks/etc before then it could work. Comparing to my meal at La Carnita, although the ones at La Carnita are pricier I was pretty full on eating just 3 of their tacos as they were quiet a bit larger. So, the "value" aspect is debatable but overall I do think that Grand Electric gets a slight edge in my books for flavour. I went to La Carnita when they first launched on College so I will need to go back to refresh my memory.

I agree with you - LC's tacos are a little more $$ but bigger, so value is about the same to me. Flavour-wise, GE beats out LC overall, but only by a bit. LC wins as they take reservations. Sound-wise, that may be a bit of a wash too - was at LC last week and it was pretty loud, though GE still feels just a decibel higher.

Ha, I probably would have never ordered it if I knew 100% what it was... Sounds nasty but it actually tasted pretty good! I didn't know LC takes reservations, that is good to know.

Finally went last night, a Thursday. At 10pm there was no lineup.

Ok, so the food was good and I would go back. We had every taco on the menu, but the standout was the fish. Nice size, good texture and, most importantly, the flavour profile was distinguishable. I love fished tacos and I really liked this one. I can't say the same about the others, the pig tail tasted the same to me as the chicken as the beef (admittedly I was drunk, but whatever) The al pastor was different because of the pineapple, but otherwsie it was the same. Good thing they're all the same price. And good thing that the sameness was good flavour.

Oh and the spicy squid that is getting raves sucked. I mean, it was edible and all, but monotone spice flavour and the breading was all soft because of the spicy sauce.

Service was friendly, but you couldn't hear anything the server was saying in that room. I must be getting old.

Finally went last night - a Monday - 30 minute wait for a glorious patio seat. Really loved everything served. Strong delish Margs. Great friendly service. My friend and I were saying this could easily be in Austin (save the higher prices here). That's a great compliment. Want to go back now.

OMG, great observation re: Austin. I agree.

We finally went last week. We arrived around 6 and were instantly seated on the large back patio, which was half-empty (as was the main room at that point). What followed was one of the more fun evenings out in recent memory. The weather was bizarre that evening - one minute it was warm and beautiful, and then the skies opened up with a sprinkle and then a downpour out of nowhere. All of us huddled under the patio bar for about 10 minutes and hung out together, chatting and swapping notes about what we were eating. The rain stopped, the staff quickly wiped up all the tables and chairs, replaced our water glasses and we were off to the races...until 10 minutes later, when the whole thing happened all over again. Back under the bar, we all re-acquainted ourselves with each other, ordered drinks, chatted, etc. By the third downpour, we were taking pics of each other and laughing about it all. One of the owners went to the local Dollar store and gave each of us a red umbrella - a totally fun and nice souvenir of the evening. As you can imagine, we were all there longer than planned, which obviously wreaked havoc with their wait times for new tables - and yet staff were thoroughly fun, friendly, patient and gracious throughout, turning around what could have been a ruined evening into a very memorable one.

We had the spicy squid, a few tacos, the tuna ceviche, guac and chips and tried the desserts in little jars. Overall, I'd give the food a B to B+ - solid and good but not mind blowing. For pure flavour and innovativeness, I'm still a fan of Agave y whatchamicalit in Kensington and I I prefer the guac and chips from Playa Cabana. Desserts were quite tasty. BUT as an overall night out, taking into account the good food, super service and fun atmosphere, it's a no brainer that we'd go back.

We went last night (Tuesday). Put our name on the list for a table for 4 at 7:30 and were told to come back in an hour. Went to the Rhino patio (across the street) for a beer then came back at 8:30 and were seated on the patio immediately. The pork carnitas were a special that evening, and were incredible--intense pork flavour. They had a draft from Dieu du Ciel--nice!--and Bellwoods brewery. Tuna ceviche is embarrassingly large and crudely presented but dee-lish, and the spicy squid is great. Baja fish taco is still my fave: perfect batter and a nice chipotle kick. The service was exceptional as always, and Ian, one of the owners, came to our table to entertain us several times, apologising for the crack heads on the other side of the fence.. It's super fun and cheap. Always a blast. Enjoy it while Parkdale still has its edge.

Went yesterday for about the 10th time now...

I really enjoy the place, but I think the expansion to the patio, basically quadrupling the size of the restaurant, is causing some problems.

They no longer take a number and call you back, they just give you a time to return at. When we returned at that time we had to wait another 15 minutes.

They have a lot of new staff and our (new) waitress took forever to get our order and then messed up the order. She was not as good as the regular waiters/waitresses, whom I really like, and have always given me great service.

The food took a LONG time to come out and was lacking in certain respects. The guac usually has some kick to it, but this time they seemed to have forgotten the lime and whatever other ingredients they use. It was pretty much just mashed over-ripe avocado - very bland. The pork belly tacos also came out cold and kind of dried out.

The crowd is also getting a bit douchey now, but I guess that's out of the restaurant's control.

Anyway, I really like Grand Electric, and I like the new patio - I just hope that they are able to keep it up to the standards that I got used to over the winter.

LOL I went to the The Social once to see a band when it was open and it was one of the most irritating crowds I've ever encountered in Toronto! We went to GE last night and have always noticed an element of douchey there, but they generally just keep to themselves.

We got there after 10 and got seated at the bar right away. Our taco order was lost at one point, waiter noticed it just as we were about to say something and it was promptly corrected. Food runner also apologized for the delay. Menu was a bit smaller than last visit and the delicious crispy pork salad was missing. But our food was awesome and we left happy and stuffed with a slight buzz.

went last night for the first time and loved it : )
fish tacos, beef cheek, chicken, and spicy squid - which was my fave.
portion sizes vary but all were $3.50 - the patio was hopping and the drinks were strong.
I'm going to go there as much as i can, can't believe how much i was missing out

many studies on this topic....search them out if you want a deeper understanding on the psychology of music (liking or disliking a place, turning shoppers from browsers to buyers, turning tables in restaurants, higher consumption in bars....)

the short answer is that faster music speeds up consumption and flips tables. loud music creates loud talk which enhance the vibe of the place being 'happening' or an 'it' spot.

but these might be split off to the 'not about food' board

Once that opens, they will have increased their capacity by like 4x or something, so hoepfully wait times are less. There are also some bars close by where you can drink while waiting for your table.

The patio is supposed to hold up to 40 so that's an extra lot of seats they'll have... hopefully that won't mean a longer wait for the food to come out!

Perhaps our expectations were too high with all the glowing reviews on CH, but either way, I really don't understand the hype. We ordered one of each taco, and though the fish taco was pretty good, the rest of them were just ok. Perhaps I expected the flavours to be a bit more complex. The most disappointing was definitely the guac and chips. The guac was the worst I've ever had, so so bland. Overall, probably won't be going again, and definitely not with a long line-up. Not worth the effort.

Went last night and the patio is not opening this weekend... too bad as it would have been great with the weather we're getting! When we asked, they said "soon" - they had to re-do all of the back so the space is still not ready.

As for the food - in order of favourite tacos: beef cheeks, then fish, then the chicken. As others pointed out, the beef cheeks had a bit of a surprising sweet taste which I enjoyed. The fish reminded me of fish and chips before I hit the sauce - and then I felt the sauce overwhelmed it a bit. I ranked the chicken last because I don't tend to do well with spicy food although as it went down, it tasted mild... and then there was a bit of a nice burn on the tongue afterwards. Also shared the tuna ceviche. Large chunks of tuna on a crispy tortilla. Lots of tuna, but I also found again there was a bit too much creamy sauce (for my personal taste). Otherwise, tasty.

I'm glad I tried the place, but I wouldn't be running to go back - especially with the long waits and so many other restaurants in the city to try, but if you've got the time, it's worth going.

Also - I noticed no one has mentioned this on the board, but fyi, it's cash only.

even my least favourite taco - the pig tail terrine - is still brilliantly put together. its a gentle taco -very subtle tastes and very smooth.
the pork taco with the mango salsa is brilliantly executed. there's a sweet and citrus kick that balances the pork out brilliantly. i think its the best thought-out taco they make.
and the beef cheek taco flavours are excellent as well. they're quite intense.

not sure what you're expecting from tacos, but I kid not when I say that nary a week goes by where I don't think about going to GE to grab a pint and some tacos. its not worth the 2 hour wait (nor do i think it should be listed in the top 10 lists of Toronto restaurants, but that's another argument), but the tacos are quite excellent and very well executed.

                                                                                1. re: atomeyes

i've been once, it's not enough to make a strong judgement but it was enough for me. i thought it was ok and tend to agree with the comments that some of it is a bit bland, or perhaps too subtle.

i think the food medium that they're using, while some days could certainly be elevated, isn't really the place for subtlety. the tortilla can easily wash out a lot of flavours and some of the expectations of a taco are bright and bold. the first time i had a taco at Hoof was before GE opened, it was nice but nothing i would go there for specifically. now the taco at Hoof is amped up in flavour and i think it's fantastic, definitely a top 3 order there for me. we found ourselves dousing GEs dishes in lots of hot sauce... even a bit of salt would have helped.

that being said, the spicy squid was delicious (though soggy, which i'm not sure if that has to do with the cooking or that it came out so early and we ate it last) and the key lime dessert has made it into the food memory vault.

                                                                                  1. re: pinstripeprincess

This place has quickly secured a place in my heart for one of my fav goto cheap and cheerful fun restos with good value for money food and drink. It doesn't hurt that they play great loud music and have a great bourbon selection.

Was told the wait would be around a half hour and they took our cell number. Went a few doors down for a cocktail and got a call about 15 minutes later.

It's loud but didn't feel it was too loud. My SO is 61 and we both could enjoy our conversation and interact with our server. There was a really drunk, loud group of women at the table by the window which was irritating. But the loudest of the group left and they all quieted down after.

Based on reviews, I expected this place to be pretentious. Our server was fantastic. He made recommendations, suggested beers and explained everything in detail. It's actually some of the best service I've had in Toronto.

The food was amazing. Highlights were the Queso Fundo. Amazing and surprisingly not greasy like it's counterparts at other places. The Guac with fresh chips was also amazing. For tacos everything was great but fish and chicken were mind blowingly awesome. We also had the fried cheese and paplano and beef cheek. Very good but not eye roll back amazing as the others. The beef cheek taco had a sweetness to it that was surprising but kind of put a speed bump on the enjoyment for me.

We got each of the desserts. There's been tons of raves about the key lime but for both of us the winner was the Chocolate Pecan. Our waiter encouraged us to pair it with a beer on tap and it was amazing. Can't remember the name but it was a chocolate/coffee beer from Montreal. The flavours were fantastic.

Finally we have some fabulous Mexican offerings in Toronto! I can't wait to get back here. This place is amazing!

Finally got to check this place out last night. This resto will now be part of my regular rotation.

Good food, good space, good music, and good service make this place a hit in my books.

We were the last two top in line for the first seating. We didn't get a table. The door guy said 45 mins to an hour (and we were prepared for longer) so we went off to the Caddy for a beverage. No sooner did we get our drinks did they call to say a table was ready for us. We downed our drinks and headed back to the resto.

We shared the table right at the front window. I love the the music is loud enough that you can't hear the conversation next to you at the shared table.

We had the guacamole, pork belly, beef cheek, tongue and fish. The guacamole was simple but well seasoned. The taste and texture were lovely. The salsa was a bit too cold but I'm sure it is b/c it had just been pulled from the fridge.

In terms of the tacos they were all good. My fav was the fish and my least fav was the pork belly. I think that I may be just a little tired of pork belly in general and it may have been just a little too sweet for my personal pref that night.

We also had the desserts they had for offer. I think that the key lime was the better of the two but for $5 each there really is no wrong choice.

The music was good and loud and the drinks were plentiful.

This place makes me and my mouth happy!

" or should the word "not" have been "now"? Seems like that is what you meant to say. I'm surprised that restaurants are still pushng pork belly, that's so 2009. But I guess they may as well keep selling all the cheap parts...

Considering how many Chowhounds have raved about the fish tacos at Grand Electric, I'm surprised no one has mentioned what type of fish is being used.

I had seen some info circulating the internet for at least 4 years saying it's raised in really bad conditions, but after doing some more searching in the past few days, I see a lot of info that looks more credible, and indicates that the catfish growers in the USA were worried about their own sales, as their product costs 50% more than Vietnamese basa. Here are two links that tell a different story:

My 15 minute wait wasn't too bad and definitely worth the wait. I was worried I'd be let down as this place is sooo hyped up, but it was a great experience.

I thought the servers were really friendly and attentive too.

Loud buzzy room with 90s hip hop blaring and packed with people who are genuinely excited to be there. Great vibe.

Ate the whole menu except for the salad, the pozole, and the two of the tacos, the chicken and the veggie. Highlights: well the fish taco is the best in the city, no contest, could be the best I've ever eaten. Lightly battered basically tempura style, huge piece of fish relative to the small tortilla. Also loved the pork belly "al pastor" which isn't really a true al pastor as it's not spit-grilled and shaved, but the flavours were excellent and the pork belly a great combo of crispy/chewy/melty/fatty. The beef tongue was also terrific, sweeter than I thought it would be but perfect with a squirt of hot sauce. On the non-taco front, the spicy squid really showcased the talent in the kitchen, the squid were just perfectly tender and flavourful. Chipotle shrimp was also terrific. I was kind of "meh" about the fried chicken, which was chicken wings and a few other chunks done in a pan-Asian style featuring a healthy dose of fish sauce. They seemed like a riff on the wings done by Portland's Pok Pok, only not remotely as good. Really out of place amidst all the Mexican. The guacamole feature excellent chips but at the end of the day it's guacamole, easy to make at home, and I wouldn't waste the calories next time. Save them for more tacos!

Oh and the 12-year Pappy van Winkle bourbon was a pretty damn fine accompaniment. I can't wait to go back to this place. FYI we went at 5:30 and waited for half an hour until the opened, got a table for 4 no sweat.

                                                                                                            Just a couple of things.

When I went last night there were two new taco varieties.

                                                                                                            - Pig tail which had a very nice tang to it.
                                                                                                            - Poblano with fried queso which had a nice contrast in textures.

I think my new favourite is the pig tail and while the chicken is still good it is markedly less spicy compared to when they first opened. Sort of bummed out by that - apparently a lot of people found it too hot. Fish tacos were as good as ever.

Unfortunately, I might be limited to Friday or Saturday nights for this place. Just wondering what the best strategy is. Rhino is super close, right?

I love the warnings about this place. "don't go if you don't like loud music"...like a warning if you're not cool enough. i'll have to dig up my checkered shirt and ironic t-shirt.

I went at 730pm with three people and waited 45min. Previously on Monday nights I generally have gone as two people and sometimes I don't wait at all though I tend to go later.

Rhino is essentially right across the street.

I've only been once on a Fri/Sat and was told the wait would be 2-2.5 hrs for two people. They called after an hour which I figure is them just going through their list and a lot of people having moved on. I also sensed a shift in clientele - women in short, low-cut cocktail dresses and 5 inch heels. I was amused to say the least.

I don't really change my wardrobe for anywhere in Toronto. T-shirt, worn out hoodie, purple cords/jeans, cross-trainers for shoes.

I also feel it is not as loud as it was when it first opened but I might be wrong on that front.

                                                                                                                1. re: radiopolitic

my friend and i came to check it out this wednesday (apparently, first day after the christmas break). we drove up at approximately 5:50pm, saw the place was empty and chatted in the car to wait for 6pm to hit so we could pay the meter (my apologies to those driving by at the time since it's a no-parking betwene 4-6pm).... paid the meter at exactly 6:01pm. when we got to the door, every single table was full (!!!) no biggie, we grab the seats at the short portion of the bar and take our time ordering. we were in no hurry. and the wait for food wasn't noticeable (although, it probably took 30 minutes for the first dish to arrive).

ordered the Dieu du Ciel - Corne du Diable and a pale ale (great beers, reminiscent of those i had at the quebec city beer festival this summer).... and a glass of chardonnay for the lady.

tuna ceviche was awesome! large, fresh pieces of tuna

soup special was yum. reminiscent of korean gamjatang (with added avocado!)

3 tacos: fish, beef cheek, and pork ... favourite was the beef cheek, but the fish was quite good as well. i couldn't tell the pork was pork belly, but they were all tasty.

the asian-inspired chicken was decent, but probably wouldn't go back for this.

overall, we had a good time, food was good, beers were great, conversation was not hampered by the increasingly louder music (i'm down with rap in this setting), and service was attentive/friendly for the vibe. looking forward to the patio!!

                                                                                                                1. a

went at 9ish. had a 1 hour wait. went to the Rhino across the way and consumed a pint. they called us when the table was ready.

we had bar seats. staff is supernice. incredibly friendly. music was kicking and loud. not a place to take your parents, not a place for most people in the 45+ demographics (sorry, folks). its loud and muddled and dark and really, really fun.

it was late, so we behaved. ordered 3 tacos (fish, beef cheek, pork) and the large pozole to share.

only 2 complaints: it took a while for our food to come out. i'd say, at least 30 minutes, if not more. and their tap list isn't so hot beyond the Dieu du Ciel Corne du Diable (but i know that's changing).

Tacos: wife was in love with the fish taco. i don't eat fish, and i had my token bite, so my opinion's nothing here. my wife said that its up there with La Carnita's Voltron taco (except without the cinnamon-laced voltron sauce). so there you have it: possibly one of the best fish tacos in town, says my wife.

the beef cheek taco was excellent. the pork taco was great as well. nice change in flavour between the 3 (you have the savoury beef cheek, the pork has a citrusy salsa and the fish is fish).

the soup: what can I say? its the new pho. its the star of the menu. so hearty and delicious and ________ (insert compliment here).

our mouths were burning, so we split the key lime dessert.

with tax and tip and 1 beer and 1 sour, the bill was $55. we didn't go there starving but we left really full (some people will want to order more).

if i lived in the west end, this would be a dangerous place. but i stress: this isn't for everyone. it has a hip west end vibe. drinking and socializing have the priority over food.

                                                                                                                    1. Bobby Wham Dec 10, 2011 05:04 PM

Tried all of them and the Pozole soup was the best I've had, nice deep flavour. This place is awesome. They also have a 50 seat patio for the summer, It's gonna be a staple. Great loud soul music playing the whole time.

Love all the tacos, especially the beef cheek. We also had ceviche (delicious but small), and a menudo special (delicious). Love the list of brown liquor on the wall. Love the Dieu du Ciel. Love the loud music. Service was chaotic but competent. I want to go back now!

                                                                                                                                  - Tacos are good. Best is Chicken. Then the fish. I might like the fish more, actually. Worth trying all.
                                                                                                                                  - The ceviche was the favourite. Great flavours and textures.
                                                                                                                                  - Salad (with meat puck!) was also yummy.

Overall, great experience. But the music - play it as loud as you want, but, it hindered communication between us and the server, which I think is an issue. I don't need it quiet and I enjoyed last night's music (a lot) but when my server can't hear me on several occasions, it's probably too loud. Also, not a place to take someone if you want to talk to them.

All the taco's were good but I would rate them in this order from best to good - chicken, fish, pork, beef.
The chicken had a slow building spice that really only hit after swallowing and was infectious. The baja fish tacos were probably the best rendition I've had at an establishment in Toronto(MUCH better than anything South of Temperance could throw at you on any given day) but still couldn't hold a candle to my spots in SD/Baja.
The beef was a tad too sweet for my personal tastes but I could see how it could work for others.

The pozole rojo was quite tasty. It actually really reminded me of a particular variety of callos a la madrilena(even though it had no tripe) or even a type of kelle paca. If only I had a giant bowl of garlic to spoon into it I'd be in heaven but that's just me being nostalgic to my Middle Eastern roots.

A few Dieu du Ciel beers and that good 'ole 90's hip hop/rap blaring made for quite a good evening. As others have stated it is QUITE loud and if you're not into that it is definitely not the place for you.

                                                                                                                                    1. Bobby Wham Nov 28, 2011 12:59 PM

Again super tasty, especially the baja fish taco, topped w/ morita. The space is geared for boozing + snacking, not full out dinner.

My experience, summarized for those who don't want to read paragraphs of descriptions: if you're looking for great beer selection, a cool spot with hip music and want to try some really good Mexican, Grand Electric's pretty awesome. If you want a mind-blowing food experience or an amazing dining out experience, its not what GE's meant to be.

The pork bone soup and the pork tacos were excellent and must haves. The fact they have Dieu du Ciel on tap is a major score for beer lovers.

Hip-hop, bourbon and tacos - its like they melted my brain and poured it into restaurant form. Pork belly al pastor is awesome. The baha fish taco was also great, but the fish got overpowered in the red salsa given, should have just used green. Those who like a bit of kick should ask for mommas hot sauce which I think is bonnet pepper based, they have it in the back and will only bring it out if asked.

I should probably just move in now.
