Here I Go Again, Asking About Reservation Policies - Locanda Verde!

JD5761 Nov 21, 2011 02:55 PM

I justed posted yesterday asking about Peter Luger and now today, I tried to make a reservation at Locanda Verde for Tuesday, December 20th at 7:30 and I was told they don't take reservations at this time of night?? Apparently between 6:30 and 8:30 reservations are not accepted and I was offered 8:45 (hmmm this sounds like the same time Peter Luger gave me - how peculiar).

Anyway ... I can see on the Locanda Verde website that they accept reservations and walk-ins but it does not specify a certain timeframe that 'walk-ins only' will be accepted. I will ask what I did with my other post/question - is this "typical" of trying to get a reservation at Locanda Verde??

Yeah, this is typical too. There was a thread on this board discussing the reservation policy of Locanda Verde and Minetta Tavern. It seems that it's not possible to make a reservation for prime time at either restaurant.

DO not go and try to wait at the bar or wait in general on a friday or sat night. Had a very rude hostess the 2 times we tried. Never got a table after 90 min of waiting.

My mother had a terrible experience with a hostess there, who apparently gave her a very difficult time about sitting outside-she thinks it was due to her very casual dress(My mom is a swell gal, but not always a fashion plate). Whatever the cause, it is really disconcerting that a restaurant with fantastic food and generally good service has such low standards for the people in charge of "welcoming" guests.

When making my restaurant list for this upcoming trip, I had searched Chowhound and read posts about how rude the reservationist's are at Locanda Verde along with the staff. I have to admit that this restaurant was an iffy choice at best. There are so many "great" restaurants in NYC that we are questionning if we need the headache and hassle. What swayed my decision to go is the menu as it looks really good ... however I have to say we are re-thinking that maybe this is a restaurant we should skip.

Has anyone had an absolutely positive and wonderful experience at Locanda Verde? Would love to hear your comments.

I'm a little surprised by the 6:30-8:30 time frame. I'm fairly certain we got a reservation for 4 at either 7 or 7:30. I know this because the people we were meeting were coming after they got off from work and one was in Brooklyn. Anyway, that was probably a year ago so that might have changed. I don't recall anyone being rude, but I can see how they possibly could be. The entrance gets absolutely jammed with walk-ins. The bar is mayhem also.

Is the food great? Yeah, I love it. Karen DeMasco kills the desserts, too. There's no way I stand in that sea of humanity during the winter to get a seat, though. I don't know how much the hostesses get paid, but there's no way it's enough.

I would not go without a reservation. I'd take 8:45 or go someplace else. Waiting in that mess in just not worth it.

I too just tried to make a res for Dec 22nd for 6 people. I called one month in advance to the day at 8 am exactly. By 8:01 when I got to speak to someone they only had 6:30 and 8:30. When I asked about why there was nothing else available between 6:30 and 8:30 I was told they have limited tables and they go quickly. When I asked if they had all gone in the past minute they said yes, they have multiple people on the phones and they go quickly. When I said, “wow, it’s hard to believe they all went in one minute” they hung up on me!

I'll start by saying, any wait at Locanda Verde isn't worth it. I do not like that place or the service there. I;ve been there 3 times. There is much better food in Tribeca. As far as Peter Luger goes, $20 bucks ( 2 people) gets you a table, reservation or no reservation.

Had no problem walking in as a single diner and sat at the bar. However, really didn't get the hype. The food was pretty ordinary- nothing better or different than I would get at a good bay area Italian restaurant. Also had the misfortune to sit next to a truly nasty b*tch who spoilt my meal. Not really the restaurant's fault though.

Considering we have plans to dine at Apizz, Peasant and Maialino already, it wasn't difficult to change our minds about Locanda Verde. Maybe the next time we visit we will consider the restaurant again. Thanks for all your input.
