Seeking quiet but festive restaurant in Oakland or Berkeley for small 90th birthday celebration
I'm taking my mother out for her 90th birthday with some friends and I'm looking for a quiet place for dinner on a Tuesday night. She likes most kinds of food -- except for Mexican. It would be great if I could find someplace with a small private room or nook that could accommodate about 7 or 8 people. Berkeley or Oakland. Italian, seafood, American or Asian would all be good. For an example, I love the back space at Zatis on Piedmont but we were there a couple of weeks ago. Thanks for suggestions.

Oliveto has a glassed-in room, though on a Tuesday it'll probably be quiet anyway.

china village in albany has a separate area to the left of the restaurant. not sure if it can be enclosed or not. fwiw, many higher end asian eateries ( and others) have contingencies for small parties. call your favorites and see.

Bay Wolf on Piedmont doesn't have a private room, but the space in each of the two dining rooms is acoustically friendly and the wooden wainscot, gracious service and classic menu would please any mother, 90 or otherwise.

Rivoli is a nice space, good food, and reasonably quiet.

Seconding Rivoli. Let them know its a birthday celebration and they'll make it feel special. My older relatives enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. The food is always delicious.

We took a co-worker out to Ozumo in Oakland - for 9 people, they gave us a private area towards the back of the restaurant. Not an actual room, but they used screens to make the table more private, and it worked just fine. It was a tad tight for 9 people, so 7-8 people would be perfect for that space.
