The D.C. shuffle

I'm huge fan of the DMV, my family lives in the area, I've worked on films in the area, and most importantly I've enjoyed the foods of the DMV. Next weekend I'll be traveling to D.C. again. I've eaten in the NE (Horace & Dickies, amazing fish) and the NW (Ben's Chili Bowl, also great food). Now I look for a new challenge. My question: Where are some the exclusive (yet good) places that most don't know about. The "hole in the wall" joints that keep locals coming back for seconds, c'mon D.C. Bmore, & VA I trust you guys.

  1. That's an easy one for me. Pimento Grill, Jamaican, in SE DC. Mostly a carry-out with a couple of tables and a few counter seats. Link:

But do not get the jerk chicken there. for that, you need to try Just Jerk in Lanham, MD. A serious operation.

By the way, before you leave the area, stop by Eastern Market in DC and get some hot half-smokes to cook at home. They are the kind of local sausage featured at Ben's Chili Bowl. Char them up nicely in a hot pan and you will have a meal that will slay what Ben's does.

Thanks very much, I've been searching for a new Caribbean restaurant outside of Philadelphia. I'll definitely try the Eastern Market, I'm always up for trying something new.

I also like the Filipino restaurant inside a medical building, The Fairfax Inn in Falls Church, Va, but it isn'tt open past 6pm. Go for the daing na bangus which is marinated milkfish. You might never return to Horace & Dickie's.

    2. Grace Garden Chinese restaurant in Odenton MD is fantastic and clearly a joint!

      1. it's been a few years, but I never had a bad meal at Malaysia Kopietiem on M street NW near 18th or so. not only is it a hole-in-the-wall, it's a hole-in-the-ground.

        1. Try some Ethiopian! Its a great ethnic cuisine that DC is known for. There are a ton of great options, just search for it on the boards and you will get tons of threads.

Ethiopian sounds great! The first time I tried Indian food it was in D.C. so that sounds like a plan. I'll definitely look up the different boards.

          2. I'd argue that The Passenger is beginning to acquire this status, too. Their bar food is pretty great, their beer list rocks, and their cocktails are incredible.
