Donut Cooperative

Who has been?
Thoughts?

I'm a huge donut fan, so I've been awaiting the opening since I first heard about them a few months ago. I made it over there there today. Cute place, completely packed at 10:30ish a.m., and a pretty awesome cake donut. What a great addition to the neighborhood.
I had an apple and a pumpkin, both still warm from the fryer. They're way too greasy, but texturally perfect and not too sweet. Very much a homemade looking and tasting donut which in my book is great. LOVE THEM, and I'm actually much more of a yeast donut girl. Hopefully ironing out the start-up kinks will include figuring out how to tone down the grease factor a little.
I didn't try any of the other non-donut offerings, but they all looked great.
Only cake donuts, no raised (for now?)

Hurray for new donut places!

  1. Sounds great. Where is it?

    1. One of my co-workers brought some into the office. I thought they were good, but would agree that they seemed kind of greasy. They were crispy on the outside, and it was a nice texture to eat, but there was a definite oily residue on my fingers when I was done. Not sure if people think this is good or bad: the cinnamon sugar doughnut tasted like a mini-donut.

      1. Here is my experience from last week:

        I love donuts.

I stopped at Donut Cooperative this morning and got 5 cake donuts, one each of their non vegan offerings. I brought them to work, still warm and we all agreed these were really terrible. I've never eaten such a greasy donut. Not sure if they are having an off day, or if these were just not our style but they were pretty bad. One of the five of us finished theirs and the rest got thrown away. My car smells like grease, my cube smells like grease and I've washed my hands and still i smell grease.

The service was great and everyone was super nice and I really really wanted/expected to love these. I won't be back......

I was there at 9am and there was no line or crowd if anyone wants to check it out.

On the other hand, I stopped at YoYo on Tuesday and got 2 dozen of various kinds and we all loved these. I think we'll stick with YoYo.

        1. I feel so terrible. I want these guys to succeed and I waited a long time for them to open and get going. We finally found the time to go and.....oh, my.

I can only guess that something went terribly wrong for them last Friday. These donuts, both raised and cake, were dense and completely tasteless. There was clearly no salt and no sugar and nothing else with any flavor in any of the six kinds we bought. If I hadn't felt it in my mouth, I wouldn't have known I was eating anything! They seemed to made from flour and water and minimal leavening and nothing else.

Went to Mojo Monkey today to see if they had gotten their act together yet, and they sort of have! Only cake donuts available, no raised. They were, however, delicious. Gently sweet and well-flavored. Yum.

I want Donut Cooperative to get it together. Donut makers, TASTE your product before selling it.

I agree. They are definitely going in the wrong direction. They are making e biggest mistake new restaurant can make. They have too many many options and aren't great at any one of them.

They need to simplify find their four best donuts, make those well and then expand slowly.

I was at Mojo Monkey for the first time yesterday--late, so there wasn't a lot to choose from, but everything we tried was great for exactly the reasons you say. MUCH better than the grease bomb that was Donut Cooperative, although I not giving up on them yet. I'll give it a couple of months and try again.

            2. Just an FYI - they're closing this Sunday, December 23.

That's very sad. After I had such a bad experience there, I did call them to let them know about it. I wasn't judgemental; it was more of a "thought you should know about the donuts I bought there recently" call. The person I spoke to was defensive and disbelieving - she clearly thought I was wrong, even when I asked her if they tasted every batch to be sure it was O.K. Isn't that a cardinal rule of food prep? Taste everything? She also thought that offering me a free cup of coffee "next time I was in" would fix things. Perhaps a nice gesture if there is a service snafu, but no reason to go back if the donuts don't get fixed!

A co-worker brought these in twice. The first time I took a single bite and thought they were terrible. The second time I didn't even try one, I thought "not these again!" That's when I saw the logo on the box and felt bad, as it sounds like something I'd like to back (indie shop), but the donuts were awful (and awful greasy).

I saw this, too. Sad but not surprising.
