Tasty Rice plates at New Woey Loy Goey

3 of us had lunch today at New Woey Loy Goey in Chinatown ..... we were there right when they opened for lunch at 11am. Prompt service - brought us tea and the menus. Took a few minutes to be astounded by the low prices and a pretty big selection of rice plates. Had 4 rice plates for $3.95 - Curry Chicken, Szechuan Bean Cake, Tomato Beef & Bean Cake Beef. 20 other plates for $4.50 - standards like: Kung Pao Chicken, Sweet & Sour Pork, Pork Spare Ribs with Black Beans, Beef Tendon with Turnip, Beef with Bitter Melon .... For $5.25 Oxtail Stew, Prawns with Tender Greens, Beef Tripe with Black Beans, Filet of Flounder with Tender Greens or Lamb with Dried Bean Cake. And for $6.95 you could have Oyster & Roast Pork .......
The plates were generous ..... big portion of rice and a sizeable portion of the entree as well. The house soup was pork and winter melon - quite good.
We had the Chicken & Mushroom plate: nice big plump chinese mushrooms, and tender chicken ..... The bitter melon & beef with black beans was well prepared: beef -tender and the melon a nice bright green but still cooked ..... the black beans cut the bitterness somewhat. My curried beef tongue was OK ...... the tongue was tender, there was a lot of vegetables mixed in to the curry sauce - which had a little bit of spice in the finish. If you want a bargain lunch - this menu definitely has some room to explore.
Definitely a bare bones atmosphere - about average for Chinatown.

    nice report.
would go here if i didn't have a fixation on the curry lamb stew over rice (6.45) across the street .
comes with house soup, coffee or tea, and jello

        the cooking styles are different.
new woey loy goey is chinese cooking
new lun ting is american food cooked chinese style.
depends what you like. think the chinese style is more falling off the bone tender.

New Woey Loy Goey has good oxtail stew, but it isn't fall off the bone precisely. There is some gnawing involved, which is the way I like it.

My favorite plate there, which only makes an appearance in season (whenever that is) is Sacramento blackfish with Chinese vegetable (soong yue choy sum faan). It costs extra, $8 I think, but the paper thin slices of rare fish cooking atop the pile of fresh greens is totally worth it.

New Lun Ting has a lot of history in my mind. They have been serving rice plates for years. My current favorite is roast pork with the gravy of that tickles my fancy. Either Curry, Ox Tail or Brown gravy. One of the better points for New Woey Loy Goey is the size of the house soup.

Back in the day I would visit one or other on a weekly basis. But now watching what I eat it only once in a long while but those were the days.

Yimster, a few mentions of New Lun Ting - I haven't tried it before .... will have to change that.
Is the roast pork with gravy similar to the Mariposa Cafetaria roast pork?

Today Mariposa has a bigger serving but it is the same thing. But New Lun Ting has beef tongue, prime rib, and my old favorite thin pork chops. I can only eat half of Mariposa serving and 3/4 of New Lun Ting's.

              Worth a try Gordon.

Their chicken frie rice with salted fish is exceedingly good. I think it's $5.75.

dropped in here since new lun ting closed turkey day.
got the curry beef tongue (5.5). it came with bitter melon/pork bone soup.
my portion and nearly every plate that came out of the kitchen looked huge.
soup was pretty nice. beef tongue was disappointing in that tongue wasn't that tender nor fresh. the 12 slices with onions, green & bell peppers were bland and some were dry. maybe it's been refrigerated too long after cooking.

the beef chow fun (4.50?) tasted and looked a little better than average.

I remember this place! I used to work 3 blocks away and came here often for lunch. Satisfying, cheap and fast.
