Need recommendation for Chinese Restaurant in Brookline/West Roxbury

Any recommendations for authentic Chinese food in the South Brookline/West Roxbury area? I need a place that can accommodate about 30 people and has nice decor. It's for a luncheon after a memorial service. And we're Chinese so the food needs to be good.

A quick search on Yelp suggested Mandarin Gourmet. Any thoughts?

      1. Mandarin Gourmet is suburban Chinese, not bad for what it is, but not authentic. Of the two others, Sichuan Garden is closest to West Rox.

        1. Mandarin Gourmet is not good. I'd definitely recommend against that place.

Sichuan Garden is decent but I'm not sure about the 30 people.

Sichuan Gourmet can be hit or miss but is big enough.

Joyful Garden on Soldier's Field Road is not very far and is very good. Check their menu and the reviews on this board.

Good to know. I have driven past it a million times yet had no idea if it was good. The menu looks really good! Thanks.

About a dozen of us had their special seafood banquet and loved every bite. They also have an excellent selection of seafood on their regular menu.

              2. re: C. Hamster

Huh. I've never had a bad Sichuan meal at any of the "Sichuan Gourmet" locations, though I find the Billerica one to be only okay. The others have always ranged from very good to great.

              3. Mandarin Gourmet is a perfectly fine choice for what you're looking for- it's not the greatest food in the world (far from it), but it's decent and it meets all the other requirements. It's not the nicest decor either but it's about par for the course for a suburban chinese restaurant. and it will fit a party of that size. and it's in exactly the right location. I would not go to any of the sichuan places for an event like this.

also- even though most of what they serve is standard suburban chinese-american, the people who run MG seem very competent and professional, and I bet if you asked them to do something to your specifications, they would do it.

                  1. re: skordalia

                    I have to repectfully disagree.

In our experince Mandarin garden has gone from being acceptable to being awful.

Our most recent (and final) take-out experience from there (Sept.) was gruesome and went into the garbage uneaten.

I have only had delivery from JoJo but it was very good.

                    1. re: C. Hamster

that's unfortunate... I guess it has been a while since I've been there...

                      1. re: skordalia

I know since its convenient to my relatives. They are fans of crappy oversauced "suburban chinese" but even they said it stunk.

And come to think of it, the people were unfriendly, too last time. Maybe it changed hands?

                  2. Thanks, everybody! I decided to expand my search to include Allston so that we could go to Jo Jo Taipei. My family is Taiwanese and I think driving a little to get good Taiwanese food will be worth it.

If you drive to Allston, add Shanghai Gate to your list.

If you like real Chinese food - of any region - you won't like any of the suburban restaurants mentioned. I have had food from all. They are what they are.

Please note that both Jo Jo Taipei and Shanghai Gate are rather small restaurants. You should definitely call ahead to see if they can even accommodate a party of 30.

                        Jo Jo Taipei is superb.

                      3. In Brookline, I always rely on Ho Sai Gai and China Sails!

                        :)

Oh man, China Sails! They had the BEST spare ribs!

                        2. Just over the line in the Chestnut Hill Mall is Bernard's. Always busy with Asian and non-asian groups.
