Christmas in Vegas

  • 8

Hi,
I'm going to be down in Vegas over the Christmas holidays, Dec 24-27th. Any recommendations as to where to go for dinner on xmas day? We're staying downtown on Freemont St, so something within that vacinity would be great.
Thanks :)

  1. Your choices are going to be very limited by trying to stay downtown. I'd recommend The Flame at the El Cortez. They even accept restaurant.com on holidays.

    1. Mandalay Bay has some great restaurants. I really enjoy China Grill and Red Square.

I foiund Red Square awful. Bad service, OK food at high prices. As Russian domestic caviar. Place to avoid. Aureole , Mandalay's upscale restaurant, is the most ovefrated high priced jolint in town. That's saying a lot.

      2. They make a great .99 cent shrimp cocktail at the Californian..good to load up with a free bloody mary while playing the penny slots.
Four Queens has a fab old school restaurant, Hugo's Cellar...good for Xmas dinner.
Make sure you get to Lotus of Siam on E. Sahara in a divey strip mall by the LV Hilton..lunch or dinner is out of this world good for off the menu Thai..buffet is popular.
Counter at Binion's is one of my fave's...solid diner food and Moneta is the best!
Noodle Bar at Golden Nugget used to be good but haven't been in awhile.

As far as I know, the California does not have a 99-cent shrimp cocktail. Might you be thinking of the Golden Gate? If so, it raised the price to $1.99 quite a while ago.

            Aloha Dave!
Is the California the one that all the Hawaiian's go to?
Maybe it was the Fremont..it's been a couple years but from memory, it was a mainstay for years and for the buck they charged, it had the right horseradish ratio to cocktail sauce. with tons of bay shrimp overflowing and the gal squeezed half a lemon over it.
It was sublime for that moment in time..

Yes, the California caters to Hawaiians (and they feature an Aloha Specialties outlet and Hawaiian dishes in their snack bars). Although other hotels have offered 99-cent shrimp cocktails, Golden Gate has always promoted theirs and it has not disappeared. My brother won a shrimp cocktail eating contest at the GG.

The Golden Gate still has the 99 cent shrimp cocktail if you have their players card.
