Where to find passionfruit [extract, purée, juice] in Triangle Area (NC)?

I've been trying to figure out where I can get any form of passionfruit in a concentrated form so I can make passionfruit-chocolate macarons or a lot other desserts. Passion fruit is one of my favorite flavors and it's driving me crazy. It's used a lot in French desserts, and I had some passion fruit fondue at An's (in Cary), so they must've gotten it somewhere ... (or maybe they just ordered it). I heard that passion fruit's pretty common in Brazilian cooking and that it can be found in Brazilian supermarkets. Has anyone seen this? (I don't even know where Brazilian supermarkets would be). I'm located in Durham, but I'm desperate enough to try Raleigh / Chapel Hill as well. Thanks so much!

  1. You can get frozen passionfruit pulp at Compare Foods in Durham. I know they have at least two brands at the big store on Avondale Drive - Goya and at least one other brand. I have used the Goya because the first time I bought it many of the packages of the other brand were very sticky on the outside. Warning - Some packages leak when defrosted, so put the package in a plastic bag or a dish when you are defrosting it.

They may also have it at the smaller store on University Drive (Forest Hills shopping center), but I have not looked for it there.

A very popular dessert in Brasil is mousse de maracuja - passionfruit mousse. This is super easy to make. I would be happy to share the recipe if you are interested.

    1. For extracts give A Southern Season a call - they stock a wider selection than anyone else in the area.
