I'm in town for a few days from LA and would greatly appreciate updated recommendations on vegan-friendly restaurants. Many thanks!

For pizza, both Galactic and Pizza Luce make a point of putting vegan on their menu. And not just 1 dish, which is one of my biggest complaints about veggie "friendly" restaurants. If you're headed over to St Paul, I recommend Bravo Cafe...everything is vegetarian and a good portion is vegan. It's take-out Chinese, but still quite good.

The Triple Rock Social Club also does quite a bit of vegan (it's a "punk" rock bar / bar food).

Other names that I can think of possibly catering to you but have never been to:

Ecopolitan (raw? a completely ridiculous concept to me)
Evergreen (at least vegetarian, look them up re: vegan)
Dosa King (Indian, I imagine some things are vegan, but not super familiar with Indian standards)

Otherwise you'll have to special order, the Twin Cities do not have the population density required to have a number of vegan-only restaurants.

      Triple Rock

Evergreen has over 30 vegan options, but is notable in that their best dishes (lemongrass beef, three cup tofu, garlic eggplant) are also vegan. About the only vegan food I'll go out of my way to eat.

The Dairy Queen RE: kevin47 Nov 17, 2011 11:50 AM

What is the "beef" in lemongrass beef?

            Isn't it made of mock?

Yep, usually a wheat gluten or something similar.

It looks scarily like beef, but has this awesome texture, somewhere between a savory mushroom and really tender beef. But yes, wheat gluten...

Veg Guide is a GREAT resource for veg and vegan-friendly restaurants. It is a resource for all cities, but it was started here in the Twin Cities by a local group, so there are a TON of MSP restaurants reviewed. http://www.vegguide.org/region/13

Triple Rock has awesome vegan bar food: nacho cheese, mac and cheese, vegan sub sandwich, etc.

Hard Times Cafe is nearby and is all-vegetarian. It has a crusty-punk feel to it and is cooperatively run, but almost everything on the menu can be vegan and it has a heavy emphasis on breakfast food. Best Vegan biscuits and gravy ever.

Bravo Cafe & Bakery in St. Paul is 100% vegetarian as well. It's a small family run bakery with Asian fake-meat dishes. Random, but delicious. Great sweet and sour "chicken" and other such dishes.

We also have decent pizza selection: Pizza Luce has vegan options by way of mock duck and Daiya cheese, Galactic Pizza also has Daiya for vegan cheese. Punch Pizza is great without cheese and minimal toppings - like only basil or maybe some eggplant or garlic.

Right now, though, far and away my favorite restaurant is On's Thai Kitchen. On (the owner and main/only? cook) will make almost anything vegan - no fish/oyster sauce. Great mock duck dishes. Brave the construction to make it here.

      Triple Rock
