Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in San Diego

1st Year Wedding Anniversary in La Jolla

My wife and I are staying at the La Estancia in La Jolla for our 1 year anniversary this weekend and are looking for dining suggestions for:

1) Dinner to celebrate the actual night. Something romantic with great food. A memorable experience.
2) Cheap eats for the rest of our weekend. Brunch and lunch suggestions would be great. We spent most of our budget on the resort and are just looking for must not miss cheap eats. Besides, we kind of prefer local cheap eats.

Thanks!!

Good list! Two updates: Sky Room is closed for about six months for renovation. They now have FOUR televisions in the Whaling Bar on ALL THE TIME = Not so romantic anymore.

I would add coffee cup for cheap brekkie or lunch.

My DH would think 4 televisions in the Whaling Bar on College Game Day with his beloved College team beating the opposing teams butt would be extremely romantic..

totally agree! Nothing like a flat screen and a full mug.

              LOL..
Whaling 'Sports' Bar in the exclusive gussied up La Valencia Hotel

Perfect response from the ideal poster to a perfect post.

I might add taking some Von's fried chicken to my formerly secret Best Dining Spot in the World above LJ Shores at a certain nameless building at Scripps, with the perennially unlocked gate leading to a wraparound porch with seats, basically floating above the cliffs, pier and ocean.

          Good luck!

          Brava BC!

            Thanks Salty!
            I know that nameless building..
            : )

love the Von's fried chicken breast...have you had Jonathan's?

        3. dinner:
          AR Valentien
          Tapenade
          George's Modern, downstairs dining only
if you're willing to drive north a bit, Addison

Nine Ten is good, but less of a "romantic" setting than George's, Tapenade or Addison

          cheap:
          Coffee Cup Cafe
          Piatti's (moderately priced)
          The Cottage
          Z Pizza

          ultimate cheap:
          Whole Foods

          -----
          Nine Ten
910 Prospect Street, La Jolla, CA 92037

          Coffee Cup
1109 Wall St, La Jolla, CA 92037

            'ultimate cheap..Whole Foods'

D...I would put that in the Addison for dinner category..

George's Modern is where we went for dinner after we got married - the food was great and it was beautiful.

Though just in case anyone from George's Modern reads this - their hostesses were HORRIBLE. Once you get past them (both coming and going) the staff and food was wonderful.

            3. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'll share them with my wife and let her decide. I looked up many of them and they all look great.

My wife is a football fan but I am not sure she will want to go to the Whaling Bar this weekend.

              1. I would definitely visit Georges again, I had a wonderful time there over the summer and the service was great.
