Best place to buy steaks?

flzhang Nov 15, 2011 08:50 AM

What's a good place to buy prime/choice steaks (ribeye, porterhouse, etc.) in philadelphia at a reasonable price? I've bought some good ribeye from a place in RTM (forgot the name), but it was like $12/lb for a porterhouse.

Beware Sam's Clubs. They used to have a contract with Excel Beef and carried Excel's branded "Sterling Silver" Beef. It was top choice for sure, Modest to Moderate marbling or better and would often rate low prime. To save a few cents, they switched to Black Canyon Angus Beef from the National Beef Co which is basically low choice supermarket beef with a marbling score of SMALL or better. As soon as I saw the individual steaks in the meat case I knew something was up. As far as I know, BJ's & Costco still have the TOP grade choice but it is the generic house brand such as "National" or "Sysco" re-named Kirkland in the case of Costco. I have found that the branded programs are more consistent in terms of marbling.

Had a delicious sirloin today from Whole Foods. Have not gone wrong with one of their steaks yet, though I am just maturing my red meat taste buds.

        Was it dry aged?

No, unfortunately not. The location I go to does not have dry-aged steaks, though I have heard that other locations do.

Agree with GMCarbs, Buy whole prime ribeyes and butcher them at home. Like them better than the ones at The Prime Rib.

Harry Ochs who was at the RTM for years is now at the Main Street Market in Manayunk. You can get dry aged prime steaks from there, do not know the prices but quality is good.

+1 for Costco, anywhere. Their meat is top quality & the cuts are thicker than you can get anywhere else. You can also buy whole roast (filet, strip, etc.) and cut them yourself if you are so inclined.

How do they describe their steak? Dry aged?
