Lakehouse restaurant and Libretto - similar needed

Driving by yesterday, there was a line up out the door; is this normal?
My niece and her boyfriend like this place since they live within 20 mins walking distance (more in the College area). They are much bigger fans of Libretto too.
Can you recommend another place for me to buy a GC for Christmas?
I'd like to not go upscale as they are in their early 20s and like casual and affordable so I can get them more.
Thanks

    1. By "Lakehouse", did you mean Lakeview restaurant? It's on Dundas just around the corner from LIbretto. Yes, it does get busy there. Especially when it gets later and most other restaurants are closed. The food is okay. It's supposed to be a more modern take on diner comfort food.

As for other restaurants to get a gift certificate, there's Terroni on Queen. For something a bit more upscale, but given their age they would find fun, there's the Drake restaurant.

      1. I would highly recommend http://www.sircorp.com/web/index.cfm. They will get 20% more for your dollar, and Alice Fazoolis, Loose Moose or Canyon Creek would be perfect.

I bought these last year and it was excellent!

Yuck. If you're going to buy a GC from a restaurant group, why not Oliver and Bonacini? They could try Bannock, which is very affordable and has great food. There's also Canteen on the affordable side, or Biff's from 5-7 for buck-a-shuck oysters...or hey they could splurge and apply the GC towards a blowout meal at Canoe!

Good idea. Didn't even think of those. T Long, they still like something to open along with the cash. Might be that or Terroni; leaning toward Bonacini group.

CoS - I was just going by what the OP specifically asked for and didn't want to force my personal preferences on them. OB and Biffs do not fit the request IMO. Have you been to Lakeview?

Yuck to you perhaps but I can tell you that my young staff absolutely LOVE Alice Fazoolis, Milestones, Canyon Creek etc.

They like Libretto so they are not without taste buds. I stand behind my "yuck."

                1. re: childofthestorm

Funny because for me Libretto is yuck; serving sheep's pizza.

Regardless, the OP has upped the ante and will do very well with OB!

Where would you recommend for pizza?

                    1. re: radiopolitic

Queen Margherita, Terroni, results from my first and only visit to Alimento suggests there (namely the parmagiana).

Yes Terroni is 112% more flavourful than Libretto, not to mention better toppings, choices and value.

                      1. re: justsayn

                        margherita at libretto $13
                        margherita at terroni $13.95

                        bresoala at libretto $7
                        bresoala at terroni $13.95

                        1. re: haggisdragon

Sorry but as far as comparing the two for value, you cannot look at numbers alone. Libretto is so skimpy on toppings and serving size compared with Terroni. In fact Libretto charges a couple bucks or so more to get the same amount of cheese that Terroni normally serves on their Margherita. So it is more like 15 dollars at Libretto and the sauce is not near as good.

Try comparing their Prosciutto pizzas. You will really see the difference!

The Bresaola are two completely different dishes between the two places so I really don't know the point of comparing those by cost.

Libretto has a good crust but that's where it ends. It is unfortunate because there is definitely room for improvement at Terroni when you compare it to Tony's in San Fran. But right now Terroni is still best in TO.

Disagree completely, but this is one of those arguments which simply and completely boil down to personal preferences.

I was once served a pizza at Terronis which was almost ice cold with the cheese barely having melted. Libretto would never have let a pizza like that go to a customer.

Both restaurants are doing quite well for themselves regardless of the chatter here.

I do agree with Childofthestorm though that suggesting Fazoolis and Loose moose is total yuckage, we could do better.

                            1. re: themiguel

Absolutely there is room for both and the city seems to be happy. If you read the reviews on here you will see Libretta is not the perfect place you think it is. A bad pizza slips out just like it can at any other restaurant. And to disagree completely with my post must mean that because you got a cold pizza, they must not serve tasty pizza with more generous servings and toppings. TBH I would be stuck eating at home every night if I wrote off restaurants because of one bad waiter or menu item like so many say they do on here.

I think I will get take out from both and weigh the result and post pics. Only problem is that I just hate throwing my money away at Libretto.

To the OP situation, that's what the board is for - getting opinions. I happen to be the type who listens and responds to a question without pushing my own agenda. Others will push people to sell their choice. This range of response is what makes this board valuable.

          2. Got a Terroni GC. Now I want to go there.
